Opened Up GE Helical Here's an opened up GE Helical. Something's loose i'm guessing since it doesn't work unless you hit the base on a hard surface and then it stops workign again the next time it vibrates at all. Vince is kindly stepping me through repairing this guy so it can be used again. This one came on instantly when it worked. Not sure where to find the date though... Keywords: Lamps

Took quite a bit of effort to pry this guy open, but it finally opened. Smile

You could try to build a sort of continuity tester with a flashlight bulb, a battery and some wires. CFL cathodes have a quite low resistance, most of those I tested had a resistance around 6 to 8 ohms if I remember. The thing is to try to connect the bulb and the cathode to test in series. The low resistance of the cathode won't affect the flashlight bulb, so if it lights up, the cathode is good. If both cathodes are good, you'll need to proceed further troubleshooting, which is most likely going to involve a soldering iron LOL.

What is the cathode? Neutral How would i "connect the bulb and cathode to test in series"?

Ahh. So connect one side of the spiral to the flashlight bulb and battery and once that side is checked do the same to the other side?

Yes. If both sides are good, the circuit board most likely has a defective component, which is honestly going to be easier to fix. A bad tube means the CFL is only good for trash, or for spare electronic parts LOL.

what wattage is that? mine lost vacume. so i guess i got lucky with this CFl, i normaly have problem the other way around

This one is 13 watts. I have another one like this (except with a squarish base)that runs very hot and glows a dim pinkish red color.
