I was there as a kid in the 60s, prolly carbon arcs back then, with colored filters/lenses.

Yeah from what I've read they were carbon arc until the 90s. These lights still use coloured lenses and are manually controlled from what I understand.

Do these run dusk to dawn? Also, why do they use short arc lamps instead of metal halide lamps? 1000w or 1500w should work just fine in this application.

I'm not sure why they use short arcs, maybe they wanted the brilliant whites from them. I believe the lights are switched off at midnight or 1AM.

Anyway the last time I was there, which was last weekend I noticed that they replaced all the short arcs with high power LED floods, similar to what's used in stage lighting.
