Interesting, I've never seen that style of sign around here, all of ours use the smiley face sign in the picture. In case you're interested here's the Streetview of the area.

Ahh. that makes it much clearer to me. Yes, the sign i linked would be used if your picture was here in the states (or RI at least). We use similar signs like the one above for divided highways, though these two signs are more common for divided highways, the latter being used more frequently. I personally like worded signs better. The signs here were all mostly worded signs but now new signs have symbols. For instance, the older stop sign ahead signs actually said "STOP AHEAD" while new ones have a red octagon with an arrow above it. same thing for the "KEEP RIGHT" signs, "SIGNAL AHEAD" signs, "NO LEFT/RIGHT/U TURN" signs, etc: the worded versions are no longer installed. Only the ones with symbols are installed. Personally, I prefer worded signs because I never knew what this sign meant until recently, as the signs here for rotarys are rectangular and say "ROTARY AHEAD".

Yeah we use a similar sign for medians too, and we also use this design too.

A lot of older signs from the 70s here were worded but most have since been replaced with symbol signs. I know of some old "RIGHT LANE MUST EXIT" "NO U TURN", "THIS LANE ENDS", "NO STOPPING", "BRIDGE ICES FIRST", miss outs still up though.
