Lamps and Starters for the Preheats
|
Starters are from Home Depot and the lamps from Benny's. I had to take one of the lamps back though since it was a dud. I accidentally hit the end of one of the 2-packs against the doorway bringing them in so i guess i killed it. I simply put the single lamp on the far right (which was good) in the sleeve and took the bad lamp out and out the benny's sticker on it. The lamps are identical besides the fact that the etch on the single lamps aren't as bold as the dual-packaged lamps. The single lamps are also a bit bluer and brighter than than the dual-packages lamps. The dual-packaged lamps are somewhat yellow when lit even though all the lamps are cool white deluxe.
I haven't tested the starters since i don't have a preheat 40W fixture of my own, though i don't see why they wouldn't work. i think all of the starters in the fixtures are good anyways but these are just in case.

If you want to guard against you should get some cutout/Watchdog starters which have a small thermal cut out inside.
I guess if you fix it quickly it won't harm the ballast but just don't leave it like that for years. Ideally you should fix them when it starts strobing but if you can't taking out the starter or the lamp will prevent this.
BTW, what are/were F40T12 cut-out starter named (T17 are FS-85 but the cutout ones are FS-850).
I believe the name for the F40 cutout starter varied but I think it was COP-40, FS-40/400, or "Watchdog" for GE as opposed to FS-4.
BTW, the cut-out starters are called manual reset. I found this spec sheet and the manual reset FS-4 and FS-2 starters are indeed called FS-40/400 and FS-20. I wonder if Hubbell still makes them of if this spec sheet is outdated.
