(NOS?) Westingohouse 160W SBMV Lamp
What a beautie this is! I had never seen a SBMV lamp before, let alone a westie! This gets very hot. The arc tube doesn't really put out anymore light than the filament, only the color shifts to a whiter color and makes fluorescent-colored objects stand out.

Shocked Never seen a PS shaped SBMV before, very nice!

Thanks. I didn't realize most SBMVs weren't this shape...

I have two SBMVs, one 220-230v and one 120v and both are E24 shaped.

What does that shaped look like? Is it like an ED lamp without the dimple?
joe_347V   [Sep 16, 2012 at 04:18 AM]
Yep Razz

Cool! I have one too, from Joe Maurath also. Mine was mfd March 1983, so I assume yours is the same.

The date code is "3 3", the same as a westie 100w cleartop i had gotten from him back in July.

Thanks guys! Cool to know you have one too Dave. Do these typically run really hot? What wattage is the filament and the arc tube separetly? This seems to put out around the same amount as a 200W incandescent.
Silverliner14B   [Sep 16, 2012 at 11:28 PM]
Yep thats 3/83 for this lamp, but 3/73 for that cleartop. SBMVs do get very hot because you have both the filament and arc tube. I think generally 2/3 of the energy goes to the filament, the rest goes to the arc tube.

Thanks. Why are the date codes the same if there's a 10 year difference between the two? Neutral Can SBMV lamps run in any position or are they base down?
Silverliner14B   [Sep 16, 2012 at 11:38 PM]
Codes run on a certain cycle, it may be 8 years, 10 years, etc. Every manufacturer is different, they have their own secret ways. Codes are used for warranty reasons. BTW, yes you can use it in any position.

How can you tell the correct year then? Is it by process of elimination?
