Painted this yesterday and assembled it this morning. It was hung just in time for lunch. I shortened the yellow romex after the pic. The leftover romex will be used to mount the T8 wrap light in my grandpa's basement.
Thanks! Yeah i try to keep the paint as original as possible when i'm restoring lights. BTW, could looking up the UL list number help me or someone else date this? The paper UL label has a number like Listing # 47,000 (with the last three 0s repalced by other numbers) on it...
Thanks! Yeah I've only ever seen two lamp preheaters when it comes to four-footers. I was anticipating this to be an early rapid start fixture since the starter was hidded above the lamp. The ungrounded cut cord should have been the give away... I'm much happier with it being preheat though! Plus it was in such good condition too. I searched everywhere on the oval shaped HPF GE ballast for a datecode but didn't find one. Jace thinks this is from the 50s, which seems reasonable. The sockets are Hygrade Sylvania Corperation branded.
I think single lamp industrial units are pretty rare thing by itself, I've only ever seen them at my old high school in the display cases. They were removed and replaced with plain old dual T8 strips 2009-2010 but I was able to score a pair which I used to light my workbench.
I've also seen single lamp HO fixtures before in a fire exit stairwell, I'd guess those are pretty rare too.
Yeah single lamp HOs sound sort of rare, though I don't think I've ever seen an HO light. only slimlines. BTW, does anyone know where the term "slimline" came from?
Hmm, looking at here it seems the Hygrade-Sylvania name was only used between 1938 and 1942. The oval shaped ballast seem to suggest that it's from the early 40s too, I think newer ballasts from the mid-late 40s had rectangular cases.
oh wow! yeah the ballast is 1940s looking. i can't believe this staying in such great shape over the years! i think the preheater at my grandpa's shop's bathroom is from 1940-ish, making it original to the building.
Hmm this light or the one at your Grandpa's place? If the hole is small enough and the metal thick enough you might be able to fill it with Bondo or something similar before you paint it.
the fixture in the pic has a hole in the reflector. you can see the hole on the bottom right portion of the reflector that's over my basement's tile above. the one at my grandpa's shop is in pefect shape though it looks really dirty and in need of a good rinsing and knowing me, a nice coat of new paint. my grandpa hasn't heard of spring cleaning i guess lol.

the original Slimline lamps were T8 @230mA not sure why T12 came after, Dave D knows more
@ Jace; this was bush-coated steel. You could tell the paint had a "hand-coated" texture to it.
