Interesting, but they kind of ruined the fixture by cutting the original housing... Sad Well, it's cool to see how it is made inside. Do you have a closer shot?

I think its so post to open up like that.

Sadly no, This is the only picture I have of the fixture, If I'm in that area again I'll see if I can get a close up picture of it. I recall that the original housing wasn't cut though, I think they just opened up the ballast door on it.

Well I just went there yesterday, and its a very cool little place! BTW the housing does open up for sure.

Yeah it's cool little place for sure, It's nice that you got to visit and see all those lights there in person.

Wow. This a very old and very cool looking fixture. Smile How did carbon arcs work? Is it just a current passed through a special rope?
gailgrove   [Jan 25, 2012 at 11:54 PM]
No, it was electricity arcing between the two carbon rods, that creates light. The carbon rods wear away so they need to be adjusted and eventually replaced. See this video. Wink

Very interesting. Very Happy Thanks for the video Niall.

Interesting video, I've experimented with small AC carbon arcs using some lead pencil leads and a NST, although it was more smelly than bright. Laughing Shocked
