Self Ballasting LPS! Screw in LPS! CLPS!
|
Yep, had the NERVE to make a self ballasting LPS out of a CFL ballast and some CFL parts!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I tried using 13 watt CFL ballast at first it seemed to warm up too slowly and seemed a bit too dim....this one runs at 19 watts, I think may still be slightly underpowered...not sure though.....I'll have to compare side by side with an actual LPS ballast.
This case, it seems to warm up a bit differently than the normal ballast.....instead of warming up from the ends to the middle...this case it seems to warm up more evenly starting with the walls of the tube to the middle of the tubes! Oh I used an European socket I got from Sean who lives in Africa.

I had a similar idea as well but I was going to offset the ballast to one side similar to a Enertron 3000 series CFL adapter to make it more compact. Anyway, for an 18 watt LPS, I believe a 23 watt CFL board should work nicely but brands could vary.
Besides the Fulham WH-2, I also tried a Greenlite 18 watt CFL ballast (dropped and broke the spiral a while back, kept the bottom) and a 25 watt Buffalo which I butchered for the project. The 18 watt was very under-driven and only drew 14 watts according to my kill-a-watt and the 25 watt seems to work nicely but I feel it was slightly over-driven (I recalled it warmed up very quickly).
