Here I picked these up at Walmart not far from the Big Chicken at Marietta, GA, USA today (2013-3-21) finding both version made here. The one on the left is made from China and the other at the right is made from Mexico.

hmm i have to say i prefer the etch and filament structure of the chinese lamp over the mexican lamp. Neutral the mexico filament looks so delicate...

Yeah, I always though vertical filaments looked more fragile than the traditional style filament.

the vertical fliaments always flop around! i have seen them last a good life though

Yes, the China bulb has a supported filament, may be less likely to break.

I agree, but I personally prefer vertical filaments for some reason...

It's interesting to me that the bulbs have the same light output despite the Chinese bulb having an extra support that acts as a heat sink. I'm willing to bet that light output is slightly less for the Chinese bulb because of this, but still has a nominal output of 780 lumens.

Are vertical filaments more efficient than horizontal ones? Because a lot of newer incandescents right before the bans had lower lumen ratings than their vertical-filament counterparts... like a 60w used to be 890 lumens and now it's like 825 lumens...

the extra supports act as heat sinks likeLumalux said so i guess if the filament isn't as hot it won't be as bright, making the vertical filaments more efficient but i don't like them because they're a lot more fragile than the supported C filaments.

eh depends. you wouldn't want to use vertical filaments in a garage door opener or in a table lamp but in a stationary fixture that doesn't vibrate they'd be great. Depends on the application for me...
