I'm starting a construction vocational course in high school this year. I'm going into 10th grade. The course deals mainly with carpentry but they do a little electrical. I already know how to do basically all of what they're going to teach in electrical but i'm not 100% code literate so i'll learn how to do stuff to code rather than the mr. fix-it way lol. Plus i get OSHA certified in 11th grade. we learn drywalling, roofing, we build a few sheds lol, we install basic plumbing like sinks and toilets and pipework, and install basic electrical like outlets, switches, running wires, and maybe fixtures... I'm not totally sure since this is just what i've heard from other people in the program.
after high school i plan to use what i know to join the IBEW. I have a contact with the IBEW Local 99 (the division nearest to me) so I can check the place out and see my options before i head out for the "real world".
My school has a pretty good wood shop class, the teacher is great and since he is a former electrician he's taught me quite a bit. I'd love to get into the IBEW, but the local here gets A LOT of applications and I don't know anyone "on the inside" so I doubt I'll get in.
yeah my will-be teacher is an electrician, well he could be if he wanted too since he's liscensed. Yeah my uncle's friend (who gave my the OV-10 and Cooper OVC and LED street light) is in the IBEW. He works for RISE, which is a group that NGrid contracts work off to (RISE installs and maintains the freeway lighting) plus he's a master electrician with his own business so he's extrememly busy 24/7. He's actually going to be working on a job where the last two highmast installations on the freeway in RI will be removed, one being 400W HPS, the other interchange has 1000W MH/MV highmasts. both are 480V.
