100 W Metal Halide Post Tops soon (Tommorow) to be 40W Light Emmiting Diode
As of tomorrow the post top fixtures in my complex are now going to be 40W LED instead 100W MH
I am going to miss watching them warm up for the night.

But on the bright side (Pun intended lol) I am probably going to score some cool looking post top fixtures (I talked to the guy responsible for the massacre of the Metal Halide post tops and he said I could have up to three of the fixtures and as many lamps as I can handle the rest are going to $old for scrap)

PS: I pray that they are 120 or at least have a multitap ballast as I want to make a post top floor lamp

Yes I have been eying those fixtures for a while now
I heard that they used to be 175W MV but I am unsure of that because as long as I lived here they were always Metal Halide

Edit
But I just got the bad news that they are keeping the actual fixtures so I will probably just get some ballast + lamps
oh well

PS I saw the new LED bulbs and they are actually 42W and are huge. The fixtures open up from the top and they were barely able to close with the new LEDs bulbs

I don't know exactly what they are doing as I saw them place the LEDS in the fixture (Maybe to see if they fit) and now some of the poles have a new item attached to them the pole I took the picture of is one of them

Also some of the poles have a red ribbon and some have blue one tied around it

Noooooooooooooooo!
I just noticed that the fixtures on the building itself were also replaced with an LED fixture
So Long HID I barely knew ya!
The fixtures that they used look like a giant VHS tape (If anyone can remember what those look like Embarrassed )
streetlight98   [Mar 11, 2014 at 12:06 PM]
what did the old building lights looks like? Yeah I've seen those "VHS" lights before too lol.
LampLover84   [Mar 11, 2014 at 02:20 PM]
Sorry I did not get a picture of the lights on the building
They were 70 Watt HPS though I think they were call tall packs like a tall and skinny wall pack

EDIT: Today 03/11/2014 at 2:03PM
I caught the guys just as they were leaving and I only had a minor score
I got an Advance M90 120/277V ballast with a bulged cap and a Castor Rolling Eyes 100W Metal Halide lamp
Now the ballast has an ignitor so would this be Pulse start correct? So I would need a pulse rated socket as I did not get a socket as all they did was remove and bypass the ballast the socket stayed with the fixture

Ahh yeah i know what you mean...

A bulged capacitor? Odds are you'd want to replace that cap since if it's bulged, it was coming close to exploding... Shocked Any MH lamp under 175W is PSMH since they never made probe start lamps under 175W (with the exception of some 150W energy-saving retrofit lamps). Advance ballasts are good stuff though so even just the ballast alone is a good score. I'd like to get some low wattage PSMH gear but I don't have a fixture to put it in and PSMH gear is pretty expensive to buy "just to keep around" lol.

You don't really NEED a pulse rated socket but if you were to put the ballast into use it would be a good idea... If you use a standard socket i'd at least use a ceramic one and not a plastic one. For a couple of bucks though, you can get a pulse rated medium base socket to run the PSMH gear and it comes prewired with 9" leads.
LampLover84   [Mar 11, 2014 at 11:27 PM]
Yeah the capacitor was actually leaking
So I can use a regular ceramic socket that I have (For testing) as I have some in my "Junk Box" I will get a new capacitor and lamp if I actually plan to use this long term

Edit
That weird thing they added to the pole turns out it was for another LED flood light made by RAB Lighting
streetlight98   [Mar 11, 2014 at 11:55 PM]
yeah get rid of that cap. Shocked Yep a regular socket is fine. Just try to avoid letting the lamp "hot restrike" since the igniter uses a super high voltage pulse for that which could damage the socket. if the power gets interrupted just unplug it for a few minutes and plug it back in and let it "cold start" (the lamp doesn't need to be cool to the touch to "cool start", as long as the lamp starts when you plug it in, it's a cool start)

so much for saving energy if they're going to add more lights lol. I assume it's nice and bright at night now though? BTW, those cassette tape looking LED fixtures are made by RAB too. There are some around here, both the type that look like cassette tapes and the kind which look like half a cassette tape lol.

I am going to replace the capacitor and build a fixture but only as time and money permit me to
and yeah the place is now lit like a parkway (In the bad way as in Connecticut most of parkways are not lit except for the exits and on ramps)
streetlight98   [Mar 12, 2014 at 01:23 AM]
By parkway? do you mean like a freeway of some sorts? I live in Rhode Island. Here most of the freeways are lit continuously (though they're not the greatest at maintainint he light. Rolling Eyes ). I-295 is lit only at the exits and I-95 is only lit at the exits up until exit 10. Exit 10-30 (the mass line) is continuously lit. RI Rte 4 is lit at the exits. the freeway portion of Rte 138 is lit at the exits until just before the Newport bridge, where it's continuously lit by a mix of MV and HPS. The only freeway in RI with some mercs left.

I-195 is continuously lit it's entire length in RI but has no lights in MA, even at the exits. RI Rte 37 is lit end-to-end and Rte 146 is lit from its southern beginning to halfway through Lincoln. Rte 10 and US 6 are lit continuously on their freeway portions. That's basically all the major freeways in RI lol.
LampLover84   [Mar 12, 2014 at 01:40 AM]
Yes a parkway (At least in CT) is a freeway that is only for passenger vehicles and no trucks or commercial vehicles
streetlight98   [Mar 12, 2014 at 03:28 AM]
ahh i see. we don't have those here i guess.
