Reproduction "ER" Light Poles on the QEW
Here's a picture of some reproduction "ER" light poles on the QEW, these were intended to be a reproduction of the original ones installed during the 1930s when the freeway first opened.

The original poles were shorter and used incandescent gumballs instead of these HPS AEs. Interestingly they used standard taper e arms and plain steel poles on the bridge median.

I am aware of the link issues here. We will figure out how to work on this....by the way, are they planning to put more and replace the rest?

Hey Jace, I think that they're planning to put some more up on the mother side of the bridge which is where the temporary lights are in the picture. I'm not sure about the median mounted ones though.

I'm looking forward for the linking feature being added.

Is the median originally there or new too?
joe_347V   [Jan 02, 2010 at 07:38 AM]
The median wasn't a median before it was the side of the old bridge, they just built a new one next to it to widen the highway. Always I think the median lights are new.

Thanks, the 1940s picture of a similar light standard is on wikipedia just search for Queen Elizabeth Way and it should be in the article.

Yeah it's pretty cool that they decided to bring back the old design instead of using the standard highmast lights that are really common here.

Update: I recently went by this bridge again and saw that they took down the poles in the median and replaced them with more of the ER style poles.

They also added new poles on the other side of the bridge.

Show us those!

Right now I only have this dim one from the opposite side that I had to brighten up by playing with the brightness and contrast settings but I might be able to get a better pic.
gailgrove   [May 14, 2011 at 07:54 PM]
Interesting, but the poles that they replaced look brand new in this picture, I think it would of been better to space them out more.

Yeah the poles in the median look too squished together, I wonder why they used new poles as temp poles too.
