Classic Tape-Job-Gone-Wrong
Apparently the whole guts and everything came loose in this fixture. The sockets and ballast must be mounted to the channel cover, which I personally hate but anyways, something must've broken. But hey, at least the fixture works, as there were plenty here that didn't!

I laughed out loud as soon as I saw this! I've seen wraparounds with their diffusers held on by rubber bands before but never anything THIS extreme! Laughing
streetlight98   [Mar 08, 2015 at 10:22 PM]
Yeah at first i thought it was just the diffuser falling but turns out the whole tray with all the guts was falling WITH the diffuser. Laughing I don't like those stupid curved wraps anyway lol.

BTW, all the high-up lights were single lamp F96T12 slimlines and the wraps mounted low down were single lamp F32T8s.

Hey! I have those "stupid curved wraps" in my house! Laughing I actually like them much better than the "square" ones. But to each his own Laughing
streetlight98   [Mar 09, 2015 at 12:33 AM]
Eh no i prefer the standard wraps better but I like injection-molded ones best. Curved basket wraps look like the diffuser is too cheesy to resist sagging lol.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Mar 09, 2015 at 03:22 AM]
Except these aren't basket...those Lithonia basket ones do look rather cheap though.

"Curved basket" is a term used to describe the shape of the diffuser. That term came out long before the modern "basket wrap" did.

So, it just held up with the box tape eh? Razz
streetlight98   [Mar 09, 2015 at 07:36 PM]
Yeah, I guess they didn't do a very good job taping it. Laughing One self-tapping screw could have probably fixed it too...

Mad i deal with this a lot! the cooper fixtures used to have this design. when the reflector gets hit the bracket bends out of the fixture frame end and the whole thing falls, lamps, reflector sockets not good! if they save the parts i put them back together with 1/4" self tapping screws or order a new fixture, which comes with a Advance paralell programed start T8 ballast Cool the new ones stay together well even if abused
streetlight98   [Mar 11, 2015 at 08:28 PM]
Ah so it sounds like this would actually be a quick fix if all the parts are still there. I was thinking a screw popped out or one of those 90-degree turn clips broke off.

At my school, we have all Lithonia wraps in the main building. They were installed around three or four years ago and have Sylvania /741 F32T8s. One of the wraps in one of the bathrooms is missing its diffuser (and these lights are less than five years old!) and today I noticed the lamp was out. Slowly, the lamps have been beginning to fail one-by-one, and they're less than five years old too and they're all on programmed start ballasts! And in the votech building we have Lithonia three-lamp parabolic troffers from 2006 (have Quicktronic instant-start ballasts) with GE SPX35s. The lamps are all original; the only replacements are a couple of Sylvania /741s. There are quite a few dead lamps, but the GE are on IS and are almost ten years old, so that's fantastic IMO. The Sylvanias don't seem to be as great. I'm sure every manufacturer has duds though, and I wasn't around there when the GEs were put up so IDK how long it was before the GEs began to fail. There's one ballast in the new wraps that's dead (4-lamp ballast inside an 8ft 4X F32T8 tandem wrap; those 4-lamp ballasts seem to fry most often). Apparently it lasted a day before dying according to my math teacher (it's in his room). There's a troffer in the votech bathroom from 2006 with a dead ballast too. The cover is removed so you can see that the sockets melted. They relamped the bathroom and gave it new lamps even though the ballast is dead lol.

GE F32T8 lamps are definitely the best of the big 3, sylvania is about the same as phillips
streetlight98   [Mar 11, 2015 at 11:17 PM]
Wow Sylvania is equal to Philips? That's an insult to Sylvania lol. Do Sylvanias have mercury starvation issues? I haven't noted any, but you work with lots of lamps, i just see the ones in use in my school.
A_lights   [Mar 11, 2015 at 11:20 PM]
Yeah I've seen some fail mercury starved, usually close to EOL it happens, and they hate frequently being started
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Mar 12, 2015 at 02:15 AM]
And the Sylvania Octron /741s from 2013 or so have warmup issues (starting dim in the center EVERY time they've been off for more than an hour or so!). The /765s installed in in 2013 I have in use don't seem nearly as bad about that, though...they're dim overall when cold but warm up quickly (in vaportight fixtures).
Those GE EcoLux F32T8s (at least 3500K ones) are actually pretty good IMO. I don't see Philips ones anywhere near as often but yeah they seem to like to go starved...I know a grocery store with lots of them, they were all starting to dim out making the whole store seem dingy!
streetlight98   [Mar 12, 2015 at 12:00 PM]
Yeah I noticed that too, that the /700 series Sylvania lamps start dim in the middle just like the F40/CWP lamps. The 800 Series Sylvanias aren't as pronounced but they start off a little dim too.
