Hopefully the 327 stays around, as it's the only 1000W cobrahead currently available. I wish GE had kept the M-1000 around. Even though they changed to the step door design, I still preferred the M-1000 over the other 1000W cobraheads available. I liked the OV-50/OVL second best.
well if memory serves correctly the M1000 Left when? 1987 i think?......the OVL remained around much longer tho....but i thought i remembered reading or hearing that it was discontinued. Not quite understanding the large cobrahead market''s sudden death. i guess HID fixtures in general are going the way of MV and incandescent?...or is that just Me?
That sounds right. 1986 or 1987 for the discontinuation of the M-1000. I wouldn't rely on Wikipedia, though. I've found a number of errors in that one article alone.
The OV-50/OVL was indeed discontinued soon after EATON took over Cooper in 2012-ish. That was when the OVD and OVG were discontinued as well. 1000W cobraheads haven't been popular since HPS became mainstream in the 80s. 1000W MVs can be replaced with 400W HPS, which uses a medium size cobrahead. 1000W HPS and MH cobraheads are out there but they're not common. Most places requiring 1000W lights would use floods. Large cobraheads didn't have a "sudden death". They've never been popular since the 80s.
Well I installed my 1st OVX today at work. Was on light duty and needed a 400 watt HPS fixture. When I got to our stockroom, I noticed the boxes looked different and guess what! Boxes of 400 watt OVX fixtures where we normally had M-400R3's. I asked my friend who works in the stock room and he said we are switching to cooper as our GE stock runs out. I will have to say I'm not a fan of 400 watt small fixtures but it was a lot easier installing it.
LOL Yeah installing the OVXs are a piece of cake and I bet they take up less room on the truck. I prefer the M-400s but NGrid is using the OVXs too. RIDOT still uses the M-400s though. Mostly in FCO but spot replacements for drop lens cobraheads are still drop lens. I personally think GE cobraheads are better built than Cooper cobraheads (they seem to last longer in service here) but Coopers do have a bit more of a vintage look. AEL 115s have a nice vintage look to them but I've heard they're not great quality either.

BTW I still have that OVX for you.
