Interesting lol. Here the law requires that all municipalities that purchase ownership of street lights from NGrid enter the PRISM (Program for Rhode Island Streetlight Management) and use LED lights with dimming controls. RIDOT and Providence are using controls from a company called CIMCON, controlled by a wireless mesh network called Starfish by a California-based company called Silver Spring. So much for simple dusk-to-dawn street lighting.
the CIMCON controls do crazy stuff too, like measuring incoming voltage, power consumption, GPS tracking, etc. The Silver Spring system also has the ability to control stuff like street cameras, gunshot sensors, etc. The unit also sends an alert if the power is disconnected to the light. So if you plan on adding a new LED street light from RI to your collection, think twice since they'll send the cops to the street before you even get out of the bucket and if you do get away, they can track you via the PC on the street light. The units have an internal battery that maintains GPS location and maintains communication while the power is cut. So if you want to snag an RI LED, leave the smart PC on-site and just take the light lol.
