Because of the intersection configuration (Heussey Ave runs between Bailey Ave. and McKinley Pkwy.), it was decided to replace the span wire signal with a new span wire signal, essentially configured the same way. Except that now, with a new driveway that goes to the NOCO parking lot, there is a new signal that governs that access.
Yeah very rarely here I have seen spanwire signals get replaced by spanwire signals. Though I guess theoretically they don't count as permanent replacements except for 1 intersection here. Spanwire replaces spanwire typically happens at rural intersections before road widening like what happened here
In this case, you have no other choice. One thing I was fearing while the primary construction was underway was that they were going to change this to a roundabout, which would not be very practical.
US 62 huh, around where it ends, same high way that goes where my parents currently live like far down south. But HERE is a link of the intersection, appears that they were doing construction of the time of that streetview, but you can also go further and then see it done.
They could have used like a single pole configuration for both ways, I know of an intersection here in town that is like that cause of the diagonal type where it's one arm and goes over the intersecton, but I guess they wouldn't have wanted to do that here.
Another issue is cost. It costs way less to plunk down three poles and run the cabling two ways than to have to deal with very long mastarms to span a four lane main artery. Plus the signals are supported top and bottom. There's a second cable holding the signals from the bottom. As a side note, they're using copper-clad steel cable rather than galvanized, for the spanwires.
I think spanwire looks way cleaner anyway. I like mast signals at 4-way or 3-way intersections where the roads make a perfect "+" and there is one mast for each direction. Around here they like to sometimes just use a bit mast diagonally across the road with all the signals on it and I think it looks ugly.
UPDATE!!! The pole nearest the gas station was knocked down by a dump truck. City crews worked through the night to get the signal back up and running. a couple days ago.
