Cree XSP LED sprawl
Over the past few weeks here, all the Peel Regional owned roads are changing over to Cree LED's rapidly. What all the different areas that have been changed over have in common is that the City owned streetlights haven't been touched almost at all. My guess is the City owned lights will be done at another time. This section of road was half Cree'd today for about just under a KM. Its still a work in progress but by the looks of it they'll be back again this week to finish it.

UPDATE: The OVX is now gone, go figure lol.

I like the RX2's. I don't find them terrible looking fixtures, its too bad that they dont have LED retrofit kits for most lights out there today. Verdeons have got to be the ugliest LED fixture for roadway. I can think of a few others that are almost or are as bad. Yeah we have LED highmasts here too. I figured Highmasts would be the very last fixtures to go LED. MTO here hasn't really started any LED work on the 400 series highways yet.

@m@, I seen Langley adding Crees at Kennedy at Chruch st and Queen St from Dixie to 410.

Yep, and that's why that the Cooper Verdeons look like crap shovels. Laughing

"Verdeon, an ugly name for an ugly fixture, TM"
Model25FanForever   [May 11, 2018 at 10:57 PM]
Definitely the ugliest fixture lol. Im relieved that we didn't use those Verdeons here for a changeover. *knock on wood*

How do I not be a newie anymore? Been here longer than you
xmaslightguy   [May 12, 2018 at 04:54 AM]
m@
Its based on how many posts you make in the forum.
ZarlogH46   [May 12, 2018 at 04:55 AM]
If this place is anything like LG, you need to post more in the forums.
joe_347V   [May 12, 2018 at 05:57 AM]
Yeah the back end of this site is almost the same as LG. I believe LG has some minor differences but yeah the member ranks are based off posts in the forum. I believe forum games isn't counted in the total post count if you regularly post in there and are still wondering why your rank is still newbie.

I think MTO is doing some LED tests near 401 and 427 and new installs since mid 2016 have been LED so they're probably considering conversion sometime in the near future. Toronto also seems to be considering conversion too.
streetlight98   [May 12, 2018 at 11:26 PM]
@ m@: You need 100 posts or more to not be a "Newbie" anymore IIRC. I wouldn't stress about the whole rank thing anyway. I never liked the idea of it anyway since it doesn't say anything about how "valuable" a member is on the site.
Model25FanForever   [May 13, 2018 at 04:23 AM]
I never paid attention to the "ranks". I thought it was just given through admins.

Believe it or not, Already 2 Cree's have been replaced by HPS Cobras.
lightingfan8902   [Oct 30, 2018 at 04:23 AM]
Wow, I guess it was a trial of Cree's LED streetlight tryouts?
Model25FanForever   [Oct 30, 2018 at 08:18 PM]
It was initially a multi year full changeover from what I read in this article Since June there have been 0 new cree fixtures as well as HPS fixtures replacing the new LED's. Not sure whether something happened, or if they are waiting on more from the manufacturer?
Mike   [Oct 31, 2018 at 01:03 AM]
Hmm really weird. Around here some of the LED conversions are taking longer than anticipated because of manufacturing delays. The companies can't keep up! This happened in the 90s with the HPS conversion as well (and probably with MVs in the 60s and 70s), so the utility company here bought lights from multiple manufacturers and even different models of the same manufacturer just to get lights fast. Made for a decent variety of lights here.

But all the LED conversions being run by the municipality seem to favor only one particular brand of fixture. There is no mixing and matching going on. I guess it makes for more uniform installations but it's BORING! Not to mention there are several different styles of mounting arms used by the utility company here, so even if the heads match the whole assemblies don't...
Model25FanForever   [Oct 31, 2018 at 03:49 AM]
Mississauga Ontario had a similar situation with the changeovers they did there. Started installing some LED's in 2013-2014, and didnt complete the changeover unil around late 2016. There was a blip in there where there wasn't any mass new LED installs. Also the LED's used there haven't been used anywhere else here that im aware of.

Cree Canada has been kept busy considering they seem to be installing the most common LED fixture
(XSP's) here in Ontario. Wouldn't be too surprised if the city is waiting on a huge supply from the manufacturer. It is very boring in Ontario now considering almost every place that has completed changeovers has 1,or maybe 2 fixtures. Phillips, Cooper, and GE seem to be popular as well aside from the Cree's.
joe_347V   [Nov 12, 2018 at 06:52 PM]
I'm kinda glad that Toronto still hasn't converted to LED and that most signal poles in York Region are still HPS. Gives a bit of variety in a sea of otherwise identical Philips and Cree LED fixtures.
Model25FanForever   [Nov 12, 2018 at 09:43 PM]
There is currently a bid listing for City of Vaughan LED conversion, no contract claimed as of yet. It seems in Brampton they are awaiting more Cree's to be manufactured for the city.
Model25FanForever   [Nov 14, 2018 at 06:33 PM]
UPDATE: There have been some new Cree installs in the last day. I think they do change outs overnight!
Mike   [Nov 16, 2018 at 10:15 PM]
On a main road like this it makes sense that they'd do it overnight, to reduce traffic impact. Most of the time mass conversions are done during the daytime here but most spot-maintenance for street lights by the electric company is done at night.
Model25FanForever   [Nov 16, 2018 at 11:06 PM]
Yeah it seems to be that way with the changeover for the most part. Spot replacements typically happen during the day.
