Illuminated Street Sign - Render
Designed this backlit street sign, based off ones that Toronto used to use. There's a few differences. Toronto's used incandescent while mine uses a F17T8 or a F25T8 depending on the length of sign needed. I placed the ballast inside the junction box area on the left of the sign. The dimensions are similar but Toronto's are slightly deeper to fit the incandescent lamps. Mine also lacks the vents on the body.

wow this is cool! Are you going to make a physical one? I wonder where you could get the sign faces made. An illuminated sign company might but the cost might be steep.

Thanks! Yeah, I'm planning to make a physical one so I've added things like fasteners, lampholders, lamp, and ballast to the CAD. As for the sign face I might stencil and paint like I did with this instead of black paint I'll use transparent blue so the light will shine through. Another alternative is translucent vinyl but I'll have to go to a sign company for that.

The ballast I'm using can run F17T8 and F25T8 lamps (LPF magnetic RS) so I could technically make a longer version. The one here has a sign face of around 7"x24", while a F25 version will have a sign face of 7"x36".

Wow, this is flat-out amazing. I'd like to be able to do things like this but I'm not about to shell out a few hundred for some 3d program. (I don't get any "student discounts" either). Also, could you send me that Sketchup file for the OV-25 if you still have it? I would like to make some changes to it (like making space for a light source and adding optics to the refractor) so I could 3D print it.

That's a real neat design Joe! Cool

Thanks, I designed it in Solidworks and then used the built in rendering tools to render the two pictures. It's based mostly off Toronto's but I made a bunch of modifications to suit the material I had and to change the light source.

BTW, I replied to your original comment you made on my other pic with the file. I'm not sure if you saw...

Oh thanks, didn't see that.

I've seen fluorescent-lit street signs in places here (probably F32's, but who knows) There's also a more modern LED version...the LED ones suck, they're way dimmer than the fluorescent.

I think Broomfield exclusively uses backlit signs on the main traffic signals (I don't see many there that aren't) I know Westminster does it as well in some places. Though I think lots of those are LED's now.

Backlit street signs are very rare here. Toronto used to have them but they're all gone now. There's one residential neighbourhood in Markham that still has them and a couple of intersections in Niagara Falls with LED ones but that's about it.

@Lil'Cinnamon:
I was thinking of Highlands Ranch .lol. Many of the signs I've seen there (if at an intersection with a traffic-light) are backlit...but I know you woulda seen them - atleast the fluorescent ones Smile
I didn't pay attention to the type of signs (only the names on them) when I was in Broomfield last (a couple years ago).
