Vintage Illuminated Street Signs
|
These are the vintage illuminated street signs that I based my [ul=http://www.galleryoflights.org/mb/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-23452]reproduction[/url] off of. Similar signs used to be all over the main throughfares of downtown Toronto until around the 2000s when the city stopped relamping them and soon after removed them. The Markham ones are all black on yellow but the Toronto ones were black on yellow for east-west streets and white on blue for north-south streets.
These examples are from a neighbourhood in Markham that strangely enough still had a few in use and working. Unfortunately half of the signs there appear to be burnt out or not operation due to disconnect wiring. Note from the pics one has Helvetica instead of the FHWA font. That one is a slightly different design and appears to have been a replacement.
Anyway these date back to the 60s and originally used 4 60w incandescent bulbs. I used a F17T8 for my version though. I think some actually got relamped with screw in LEDs when the neighbourhood when from sodium to LED.
