What happened??!!!
One of the cheap Chinese HID lights installed in my car already failed.
Yeah, I knew they were probably junk but I expected them to last longer than 200 hours!
I had 1985 SAAB 900S with original halogen headlights that last about 21 years! One day, one headlight did burned out and I replaced with another halogen version. Then the other originial headlight also burned out. Then I also replace that too. Go figure!
The good quality German lamps last well. I have a few as spares for my car, common Osram Germany units. The H3 and H7 lamps nowdays are either cheap junk or very expensive, so I buy the cheap ones generally in bulk.
These lamps should be able to withstand the 30kV ignition pulse used to instant hot restrike these lamps, and also the booster of the electronic ballast, which overdrives the lamps significantly during their run-up period in order to accelerate its time to several secs.
This lamp probably killed by one of these things, since it was low quality made.
Average life of automotive xenon metal halide lamps, on the requred equipment, is 2,000 hours.
I see the need for these lights, but even the OEM units do not have a long life, you see many that are non functional even on relatively new vehicles, especially those that are now out of either a subsidised service plan ( common here for many vehicles, varies from 1 year/60000km to 5 years/200000km) or are driven by those drivers who are totally ignorant of the concept of servicing or maintenance. You see many "luxury" vehicles with 4 totally bald tyres, dents and other damage, as well as smoking badly due to lack of regular oil changes and poor driving habits.
The OEM xenon metal halide lamps of the headlight shouldn't have to be a major brand lamp. It can also be a low cost chinese lamp, since this lamp comes included in the headlights. Replacement lamps from Osram or Philips should last longer.
The lifetime also related to the quality of the ballast of the headlight.
