Here's a Econolite incandescent 12-8-8 poly traffic signal that I recently got, it came with three 60w clear traffic signal lamps (1 Philips, 2 Sylvanias). The light works fine now as a lamp but I'm currently building a sequencer for it so it can cycle realistically.
Thanks, I'm still deciding whether to hang on the wall on to mount it on top of a post. I think I'll save the backboard for later since it make the light too big
In Israel, incandscent traffic lights have green lenses and not blue like in this picture and in the US generally. So the green lights in Israel (With the exception of the LEDs ones probably) have just a regular green light color and not a greenish cyan color that called "Traffic signal green" in the US.
To date, i have in my gallery only pictures of green LED traffic lights and not green incandscent traffic lights and i don't know if their color is truly the US "traffic signal green" or just a pure green color. you can check my pictures of the green lights from our LED traffic lights and tell if they are similar to the light from the US traffic signal green color.
This unusual american fashion, is probably for green-red blind people as wrote in wikipedia.
Another think that i saw that exist only in the US, is that on many traffic light (Such in this picture) the red or the green lights tends to be much larger then the rest of the lights, and i don't know why.
In Israel, the size of the lights probably larger then 8" but i don't know the exact size.

@Niall yep, there's some differences between American and Canadian traffic standards and even between states/provinces too.
@Dor123: the bottom lens is not actually that blue looking in reality, it's more of a greenish turquoise colour and it lights up green because the traffic signal lamps seem to be more yellowish when lit.
Also I didn't see as much 12-8-8s in the US than in Ontario, they seem to use the larger 12-12-12s more.
Finally, I think the red light is larger than the others to increase the target value of the red signal so the drivers won't miss it. I haven't seen a larger green light except when they're using a left turn arrow along with the light.
Dor...MOST of the traffic lights in the USA are 12 inches....but a few exceptions like in New York City, most are actually 8! And I mostly actually see green for traffic lights....often sometimes glass looks blueish...but when lit, they look green....and our LEDs are PURE green!
Jace, i didn't knew about this. I don't find any israelis sources on the internet about the sizes of our lights in the german traffic lights we have in Israel (Even not in Wikipedia hebrew).
I checked the color of the green signal of our traffic lights today (7.dec.2010), while returning from Carmel hospital to my hostel, and found that while the incandescent traffic lights have a green signal that looks pure green, the ones that upgraded to LEDs (Our actual LED traffic lights) have indeed the "Traffic signal green", associated with many North American traffic lights, which is more of a greenish cyan, rather then pure green.
Traffic Signals in the US Nowadays are mostly 12 inches,8 Inches used to be predominate but appear to being phased out due to the higher visibility of 12 Inch Signals....however they still make 8" Signals,lots of them in Alabama too.
Btw, i found in the site of "Hasmal Habarak" that our traffic lights made by a company called S.C.A.E.
According to their site, our traffic signals are available in both LED and incandescent, in 100mm (4"), 200mm (7.8", close to the US 8") and 300mm (11.8", close to the US 12"), literally the same sizes as in the US.
The 4" are for pedestrian signs and small traffic ligths. the 7.8" are for wig wag orange flashers and the 11.8" are the standard size of signals for traffic lights in Israel, so we aren't different from the US in this manner.
Our incandescent traffic lights have traffic lamps in 60W, 75W and 100W filled with krypton and have 18 months life (15,000 hours rated life with an accurate conversion from hours to months unlike the general lamp life measurement).
The dotted lens of our LED traffic lights is to prevent the phenomenon of Anti-Phantom.
As in the US, the traffic lights in Israel are also assembled from a replaceable signals, so the LED signals ones manufactured as the incandscents ones, by S.C.A.E and may contains Dialights in them (Not includes lenses).
on Incandescent type traffic lights the sun can shine into the lense bounce off the reflector and make the signal appear to be lit when in reality it's not,this is known as sun phantoms,i doubt its much of a problem these days with LED's...what is an Anti Phantom?
Ontario traffic signals are mostly a mix of 12-8-8s and 12-12-12 now a days, the 12-8-8s are used the most here, while the 12-12-12s are used on some busier streets and on roads intersecting freeway offramps.
The older 8-8-8s are hard to find on the road now, but they are still used for streetcar signals
@Form109: I think that Anti-Phantom is the action of preventing the sunlight to reach the reflectors of the signal, to prevent the signal to appear as lit.

According to the data of the signals size in the site of "Hasmal Habarak", i can say that all of our traffic lights are 12-12-12, and only here and there i saw few regular traffic lights in 8-8-8.

4-4-4 traffic lights are rare and are used near the enterance to the junction in location that the driver couldn't see the main traffic lights.
Mixtures of 12-8-8 in all forms are nonexist in Israel.
@dor123 a 12-8-8 is a signal where the red light is 12" while the others are 8". If you're talking about a light where the green is 12" it would called a 8-8-12 not another form of 12-8-8.
