Yeah, but I mean they can be large water heater sized steel tanks with a huge transformer in side and then full of mineral oil, you can see where the weight comes from
Sure, i do see where the wieght comes from. On new years at my great-grandmother's house (this was when I was like 7), we were traditionally at her house watching the ball drop on new years. My family only stayed 'til about nine o'clock because my brother was only two at the time. Anyway, I guess a neighboor down the street was setting off fireworks. He nust have lauched a bad one because he hit the transformer! I saw the whole thing happen. Luckly the fire cracker wasn't good, so it didn't ignite, but the transformer managed to fall of the Smithfeild RI utility pole ( most there are VERY old.) The transformer fell, and hit the ground with a deafening BOOM! I don't really remember that much of what had happened, but my parents filled me in on what they remember. My great-grandmother, can't hear well and can't remember our names, which really makes me sad because I love her very much. She's 95 years old and lives in a nursing home now, but my great-aunt, my great-grandmother's daughter, still lives in the house. The transformer, as well as the poles on that street (Hillcrest Ave.) were replaced along with all the lights which were mercury vapor. I don't remember what manufacturer made them, but they were cobras. Probably GE M-250R's with bail latches as that was common before my time. Now the fixtures are 50 and 100w HPS OVZ's and M-250R2's.
