The insides of a Dec 1961 GE M-250R Silver
See the insides...The ballast is actually a bit older than the whole fixture itself by a few months! Take a look at the design of the ballast! Kinda primitive in a way...Works great! Oh don't forget the great looking orange gasket that was short lived in GE fixtures!

That fixture is amazingly clean for its age! And all the space is used too, not like some today's fixture that are almost empty...

Well...it's kinda actually dirty...but the reflector...was NOT dirty...only the top of the reflector was dirty..but where lamp goes....WAS "LIKE NEW"

Is the orange gasket rubber?
GullWhiz   [Apr 03, 2011 at 10:01 PM]

Nice light Jace.

Big ballast. Shocked Almost as big as my 400w 120X240v GE ballast from my M-400

Nice light Jace, it's in really good condition too!

No not really.....the OV-14B I have has an even bigger ballast and its only 175 watt MV....but whole fixture is 40 pounds or a bit more....this GE fixture is only 30 pounds
streetlight98   [Apr 05, 2011 at 09:30 PM]
40 pounds!!! That's quite a bit of weight for a 175 watter!
GullWhiz   [Apr 05, 2011 at 09:33 PM]
Yeah that 40 pound cobrahead I have is from 1957....the very first small sized cobrahead ever made....see it here
streetlight98   [Apr 05, 2011 at 10:00 PM]
Wow! Looks so lightweight.
GullWhiz   [Apr 05, 2011 at 10:05 PM]
Imagin the weight of the OV-25 the first generation and the OV-50 from that time frame Wink
streetlight98   [Apr 05, 2011 at 10:13 PM]
Gosh. Shocked 120 pound OV50. Is this thing loud?
GullWhiz   [Apr 05, 2011 at 11:27 PM]
nah, just a bit of buzz...but the OV-14B here is actually very quiet!
gailgrove   [Apr 09, 2011 at 12:58 PM]
I don't think the OV-50 would of weighed 120 pounds...
GullWhiz   [Apr 09, 2011 at 01:40 PM]
Did you know that the earliest OV-50s without the fins we're actually remote ballasted? Very Happy. Makes me wonder how you could tell if its a OV-50 remote ballast or a newer internally ballasted OV-50!!!
streetlight98   [Apr 10, 2011 at 05:30 PM]
Probably not, I actually didn't think about it that long. westinghouse fixtures tend to be longer and heavier than other company's lights.

Jace, the way you can tell externally ballasted OV50s from later models is the door. Older OV50s were split doors while newer ones were single doors. A little tidbit, the capacitors on the later OV50s were mounted on the door as well.
GullWhiz   [May 23, 2011 at 03:01 PM]
Good Point Jason! Thanks for the info!
streetlight98   [May 23, 2011 at 09:44 PM]
The ones I have seen in a shopping plaza near me has split door OV50s with fins. It was retrofitted to 400w MH.
