Those fixtures are rather common in ComEd from what I remember. ComEd used a LOT of different fixtures....
GE M-400, GE M-400R1, GE M-400R1, Westy OV-25, GE M-250R2, GE 250R1, GE M-250R, the Silver remote photocell GE M-250R, Line Materials Unistyle 400, The famous Spaceship fixtures the Josyln MV-141, LM Unistyle 175, T&B 25, T&B 13....and a few more....I haven't seen them with a clamshell though....but I have seen clamshells and gumballs commonly on the concrete poles!
The traffic light intersection fixtures tend to be those weird round HPS fixtures....in cylinder shape...
Yep, they use a ton of different kinds. I've also seen a few Cooper HPS fixtures, although I believe most if not all of the new ones they instal are M400R3's. All are mercs.
Yes although ComEd doesn't service streetlights inside Chicago City or most of the streetlights that are NOT on wooden poles.......ComEd mostly does the wooden poles which mostly are the 15 foot truss arms and the 6 foot bottom braced arms......
99% of the ComEd lights on wooden poles I have seen are MV.....ComEd isn't exactly a "Light on every wooden pole" type....kinda like BGE...but ComEd seems MOST focused on lighting intersections, with lights often mounted diagonially to the pole and road......but there is few exceptions....I see more lights used in residental roads, and some bigger roads that really need light.......From what I have seen.......they seem to only use 175 watt and 400 watt fixtures..
ComEd does provide PAL lighting like lighting up parking lots with those truss arms, some (but a bit rare) on school properties.....Fact....I have never seen a drop lens HPS used under ComEd!!!....the only drop lens HPS I've seen in the area is on concerete poles or metal poles, which is the city's or town public work responsiblity....
I used to work during the summer in Northbrook Public Works....so I got that info........the Public works used to be responsible for traffic lights....not anymore though.....
Yup, you're right! Although I have seen some ComEd lights that are 250w MV, about 99% of them are either 175 or 400. ComEd lights are generally only installed at intersections, and rarely light entire sections of roads. Despite MV fixtures no longer being sold, they are still installing MV's in new HPS fixtures.
Weird MV wouldn't really work well on HPS fixture....some may even cycle... what if its MH with MV lamp....that will work just fine......maybe the linemen are stuck in MV mind LOL...... Also very very common to see ComEd MVs installed on every residental road enterance.......also from time to time some NEMAs are only found in residental roads.....but more are cobraheads.....I remember seeing BT lamps in some of the NEMAs....(fully coated BT shaped lamps that is)
I've only seen them use 400w mercs in 400w HPS fixtures. I believe the voltages are compatible. Perhaps they simply remove the ignitor? Or maybe they swap out the ballasts from older fixtures.
IREA is one of the utilities that only use MV. What they do is when they install a new light they use a new Pulse-Start MH fixture (since the tags are red and white) and disable the ignitor, then put a MV lamp in there. I have never seen HPS under IREA, none at all. But they don't use many cobraheads, they use mostly MV yardblasters.

Ahhh memories....ComEd branded bulbs!
