Different electric utility in the California desert! Yep, I entered a different electric utility territory while going into the Palm Desert area. Most of Palm Desert has Southern California Edison, but the town Thousand Palms across I-10 has a utility called Imperial Irrigation District which serves most of the southeastern California desert. Here they have some NEMAs mixed in with cobraheads in this mobile home park. They are all HPS though. The arms here are actually made of aluminum. Keywords: American_Streetlights

Those matches the designs of the HAPCO Style 83 Tie Rod....looks 14 feet

Are these NEMAs AE? They all have mogul base ED-23.5 HPS lamps, 70w I think.

Yeah I thought the arms seem to somewhat resemble the newer aluminum upsweep arms in Rhode Island, except in RI they are only in 6' upsweep and 8' undersupport.

Dave; the 8ft underbraced upsweep arms are actually VERY old! They originally held remote balalsted lights! The 6ft underbraced arms (a lot less than the 8ft ones) all held OV-10IBs from what i can tell. The 6ft regular upsweep arms are currently installed by NGrid though there were a few isntalled before the Grid took over.

The HAPCO style 81 Upsweep is currently installed. RI also has pre-60s Style 82 Underbraced Upsweep HAPCO arms, Style 84 Tapered Elliptical (roughly 1970s-early 2000s), and Style 85 Truss (roughly 1960s-1980s) that were installed over the years. There are also a number of cantilever arms that were probably used from the 1960s through the late 80s until the upsweep took over.

I'd like to see them mount can lights in a "high mast" configuration just below the fronds of the palm trees. That would make for some cool lighting. With a thousand palms, the city should be lit up nicely and there'd be no need for light poles Smile

@ Dave; can you possibly get a closer, clearer shot? I can probably identify them that way. Is there a NEMA tag? if so, that'll make it much easier; the coopers have the lamp type in the bottom right corner while AEL tags have simply a number.
