Exit Signs
Here's a group shot of all the exit signs in my collection, the signs on the top row uses a pair of T6 incandescent lamps.

The two on the middle row are fluorescent, the sign on the left was from Hong Kong and used to used a F10T8 with a emergency ballast, it now uses a 14w Ottlite running on a 15w choke.

The right sign was a incandescent like the one above it, but I converted it to fluorescent using a F6T5 and a PL 7 preheat choke. The last one on the bottom was a NOS LED Lumacell sign, it's a 347v only sign but it also lights on 120v albeit a lot dimmer. It came with the second faceplate on the right of it too.

I have one exit sign that uses 277 volts. There is a step down transformer inside that allows the output voltage to be about 120 to 145 volts. Of course I run it at 120 making the lamps dim (but last longer!)

Hmm I guess the incandescent ones have a transformer inside but mine's dosen't, but you gave me a idea though. I 'll see if i can find a 347v exit sign transformer for mine.

I have LED exit sign that has 120 and 277 volt wires....coming from 120 just goes directly to LEDs but the 277 volt wire goes to some kind of red resister or something on the PCB board that connects to the 120 volt which I think it actually steps down the voltage from 277 to 120 or something like that...

but if powered on the 120 volt, it doesn't use the red thingy....

I opened up the LED module, and I found a extra unused tap which like yours bypasses a resistor and soldered a wire to it, now it works fine on 120v.
