Now that is really scary Shocked
gailgrove   [Aug 19, 2011 at 11:37 PM]
This isn't scary the lamp is in an enclosed fixture, now what IS scary is the 1KW MH lamp I saw exploded in an open highbay!
joe_347V   [Aug 20, 2011 at 01:03 AM]
@Niall: Shocked that must have been loud even if the outer didn't break.
gailgrove   [Aug 20, 2011 at 07:40 PM]
I should of clarified that, I didn't see it happen but I saw the aftermath - the outer jacket was broken! The highbay had also been unplugged from the twist lock receptacle for some reason, why they didn't replace the lamp while they where up there is beyond me Rolling Eyes
streetlight98   [Aug 20, 2011 at 07:56 PM]
Maybe they didn't have the lamp in stock or soething else is wrong like the ballast or cap.
gailgrove   [Aug 20, 2011 at 08:00 PM]
Well the store usually replaces the lamps very quickly when the go out, but I get the feeling it is done by the store staff, my guess is they figured something is wrong with the fixture and they will (possibly already have) get an electrician to look at it.

Very few stores here use HID now. Before 2008, many stores used HID, but now it's mainly T8 or T5 fluorescent.
gailgrove   [Aug 20, 2011 at 08:29 PM]
Here some stores converted to fluorescent recently but many are still HID, in fact one store that was built three years ago got all HID highbays!
joe_347V   [Aug 20, 2011 at 09:02 PM]
I've noticed that Best Buy and some Rona stores are still HID but the local Loblaws, HD, and Canadian Tire are now fluorescent.

Some stores built about two years ago had PMH highbays, then randomly a couple months later fluorescent ones took over. I wonder why they just didn't put up the fluorescent ones in the first place. The Best Buys here are still HID too.

I am regularly replacing MH with burst arc tubes, and some times they break the outers. Usually it is from horizontal burning of "U" lamps.
streetlight98   [Aug 20, 2011 at 11:24 PM]
isn't U for universal?
joe_347V   [Aug 21, 2011 at 12:21 AM]
Yeah but they still aren't that good when burned horizontal, the horizontal ones with the "arched" arc tube or CMH would be better IMO.
gailgrove   [Aug 21, 2011 at 12:22 AM]
Too bad there isn't a 1KW CMH lamp yet.
Silverliner14B   [Aug 23, 2011 at 06:22 AM]
@gailgrove, there is now an 830w BT56 CMH designed to operate on 1kw MH ballasts. See here.
joe_347V   [Aug 23, 2011 at 07:17 AM]
Interesting stuff Dave, according to here it also works on probe start ballasts.
gailgrove   [Aug 24, 2011 at 07:10 PM]
Quite interesting!
streetlight98   [Aug 25, 2011 at 12:16 AM]
If it can work on 1000w probe MH ballasts, does it also work on MV ballasts?
