well since they are outside and uncovered...and base up...should do pretty well actually....my 3 LEDs on my fan still is shining brightly...so is my GE LEDs which sometimes I leave on all day...Plus they look like they have been there for a bit..since the plastic cover looks a bit dirty

These Fixtures usually have a Globe over the Lamps,i can see it has a Fitter for that, and it used to have it last time i was here...my guess is they removed them since the bulbs are wider than the original globe.

Interesting observation! I found the new McDonalds restaurant near me has LED downlights and 2x2 troffers throughout. They are 3500K. Oddly, they put in incandescents over the tables and in the outdoor eating area.

Ugh, more LED infiltration.
GullWhiz   [Jul 03, 2011 at 06:44 PM]
LEDs doesn't bother me....I actually am liking the quality of those lights over CFL!!!! The CFL is just too dull of quality of lighting while the LED has much sharper and more crisp quality of lighting....so seeing LEDs in use as screw ins doesn't bother me as much as seeing CFL sprials in use LOL! Those 3 LEDS I bought for 10 bucks each on sale in Lowes are doing WONDERFULLY in my fan and to make even better, they are dimmable!
Form109   [Jul 03, 2011 at 08:39 PM]
im on the fence about LED's myself.
Silverliner14B   [Jul 03, 2011 at 09:03 PM]
Color-wise LEDs are not that bad actually, but the reliability of the LED driver units have been spotty so far. At the new McDonalds I mentioned, one of the CREE downlights already went out and one of the parking lot lights started blinking. None of the incandescents, which are short lived by nature (they are Sylvania 60w 1000 hour) burned out yet.

I think what pisses me off about LED lighting is its just too damn expensive, some of it ridiculously expensive!
Form109   [Jul 03, 2011 at 10:36 PM]
LED's seem perfectly fine in low powered units...but i think the High Powered units are being rushed into production without adequate reliability and durability testing to see how they will make it over the long run,and thus they look good in theory but start to fail in a real world situation...just my opinion, technology does improve with time so hopefully the LED's will improve.

@ Jace i'll have to buy One or a Few when i get some cash...i'd hate to spend that much money on a bulb that MIGHT or MIGHT NOT last its rated life hours.

@Tmcdllr i agree with the Price..really expensive...but i guess the same could be said when CFL's first came to the market...initally they were very high in price but eventually it came down.
GullWhiz   [Jul 04, 2011 at 03:07 AM]
@Tmclllr...I remember in 1992 and early 90s the CFLs was as high as 40 bucks!!! LEDs will go down too like CFL did...in the 80s...CFL was as high as 80 dollars!!!!! You are being pissed off over nothing...in matter of fact LED price as went down much faster than the CFL prices did back then! The CFL didn't really go down much until around 1998! By 1995 they were roughly 14-20 bucks....1997 was when the first marketed spiral shaped came up which made the CFL more popular....

Form109....I haven't seen high powered failures (the screw in ones) yet....only the built in systems without the heat sinks....Dave has only seen ONE GE that had early failure which may be a factory defect. I have 6 high powered LEDs already....5 of them being regular soft whites and 1 being a 5000K-6000K....and That's why I didn't pay full price or LEDs...I only got them in clearance...one from Walmart, one from Target...and 3 for sale in Lowes...and the cool white one for free from a friend! @Gullwhiz, CFLs were not that expensive then. In the 80s they cost $30, then they cost $20 in the 90s, and $10 in the late 90s. Now they are $3. LEDs, since they are semiconductors, prices could drop as little as $2-4 someday, maybe by 2020. Semiconductors tend to drop quickly in price as production ramps up, LEDs are also easier to make than CFLs. No vacuum, no coiling of the glass tube, etc.
GullWhiz   [Jul 04, 2011 at 03:37 AM]
I actually remember seeing marked of 40 bucks for CFL....maybe it's just it was cheaper in CA? But I heard the earliest CFL was really high priced...higher than 30 bucks higher than 40....and Dave...don't call me gullwhiz...you know very well my name! Mad
Silverliner14B   [Jul 04, 2011 at 07:28 AM]
$30 in the early 80s was a lot of money, when you adjust for inflation it can be like $50 at least. Some were $40 indeed, I once paid $38 for a full spectrum CFL in the 90s, they were so hard to find then. In the 80s and 90s, CFL use was almost nonexistent in households, I just remember a few circline units that's all.

there's this computer repair shop in a Suburb of Tyler, the canopy outside has Recessed Can lights with LED Bulbs....i think they could have been there for a while im sure they are the heatsinked screw in variety but i really cant tell, they are abit dim and flickery.

and another Case of LED used in buisnesses...a Local DQ Here replaced their outdoor floodlighting with LED,the old ones were HPS and MH,while the LED's have a Nice crisp White Light, they are MUCH MUCH dimmer than what they replaced...therefore the parking lot is quite dark at night, but they have this Blue LED Stripe that runs all the way around the building that looks pretty nice.
A_lights   [Jul 04, 2011 at 09:20 PM]
Yeah I belive that the technology isn't there for high lumen applications like streetlighting and quality is far from good !
But yeah I've had really good expeience with LEDs like Dave and Jace . The color rendering is sometimes as high as 85-92 CRI Smile yet the LPW which tends to be stated on the box is only 45LPW for 3,000K ....5,000K seems to be up to 110LPW or more
so a LED in soft white basically has the same effieceny as a CFL , sometimes I wonder If the price is realll worth it!
Form109   [Jul 08, 2011 at 04:31 PM]
the only LED's i use so far are LED Flashlights...and those are Fantastic so far.

Everything Improves with time,we'll just have to see where LED's Go.
joe_347V   [Jul 08, 2011 at 04:46 PM]
I agree the LED flashlights I've used are great, LED are also good for indications and signals too. (Although all of my traffic signals are still incandescent Razz )
Form109   [Jul 08, 2011 at 04:53 PM]
Well Brand New LED Modules are pretty Steep in price. Shocked

i've owned at least 10 LED Flashlights and only had One that went bad. Rolling Eyes
