Ray o cell photo controlled socket This is part of today's hab score. I got this along with two f40 sylvania grolux tubes for 2.25. How old and rare is it? Nice! Anything Ray-O-Cell is probably pretty rare. It's vintage nonetheless. I'd say 1960s sometime. I'd agree that the red is probably for an additional load, but you can always open it and check.

Yep, I confirmed that as per Ash's instructions on lg. If this is so rare, could it possibly the only one of its kind?

It could possibly be one of the only ones left out there. If there are any others left they're probably either in the hands of collectors or still in use.

I've never seen anything like this in the wild before. I saw the Ray o cell name and thought, this looks interesting. So I got it for $2 minus 15% off. I would not want to open this up. It has some yellow paint on the screw and part of the housing, which would indicate tampering if unscrewed.

I've never seen anything like this either. It's very cool. Is the photocell replaceable once it fails or would the whole unit be junk after that?

By looking thru the prismatic PC cover, I think I'd be able to replace the photoresistor individually. I don't want to soil it's original factory condition to analyze it tho. Also I noted it's the best condition of anything of the era I've gotten. Only a slight corrosion around the adjusting bolt and the paint isn't completely missing. I saw a ROC twist lock photocell on lg and I thought it was stated to have a metal case.

That's not what I said. So this is not designed with a replaceable photocell? I agree, since it's NOS I wouldn't rip it apart or use it either.

Oh ok I see what you mean. If on the off chance I find one of these used, I'll take it apart to investigate.

Yeah would be interesting to see the insides but curiosity doesn't justify ruining an NOS unit.

Very nice, I've got a NOS Ray-O-Cell PC still in the box. Love their design.
