Hubbell HPS Adapter
Restore find, it's one of those screw in HPS ballasts they made for converting incandescent highbays to HID to save energy. Unfortunately it's uses ballast that's slightly bigger than modern HPS chokes so it's quite long and dosen't fit a lot of fixtures. I suppose it might fit in my full sized gumball with a mogul to medium adapter.

I got the coated 70w HPS GE lamp separately at another Restore.

Nice! I have a 75W MV version with a specialized reflector lamp. It was designed for retrofitting incandescent recessed cans according to the box. If it used a standard ED17 lamp like above, I could use it in a post top I suppose. I tried the lamp in the keyless socket in my garage and the lamp made a very tight beam on the ground. I actually found the 100W incandescent far more effective. The 75W MV was brighter in the spot it lit, but didn't spread the light enough. I'm thinking it was designed for incandescent can lights mounted at a significant height though, not ~8ft off the ground so that probably plays a factor.

Please post a pic of that 75w merc retrofit if you can.

Thanks! Interesting product you have there Mike, I also would like to see a picture of it. I think my adapter is a bit too deep to be installed in a incandescent can without the lamp sticking out. Perhaps a regular ED-17 75w MV would have been better suited for the low ceiling in the garage.

Sure I'll grab some pics. It's black and has cooling fins. Box says Crouse-Hinds but it was made by another company. Has a black-varnished GE ballast with cloth wires so it's gotta be old.

Sounds like a cool looking thing, I wonder if it's bigger than mine or around the same size. I'd be surprised if a MV one was smaller than mine. Razz

The ballast box is like 6" in diameter at least.
