Be very careful with overdrivening mercury and metal halide lamps. Unlike HPS where even in an overdriven White HPS the sodium pressure is still below atmospheric pressure (<1 bar), mercury and metal halide may explode with very violence if you overdriven them.

im pretty sure the Lamps arent Being Overdriven here...infact they warm up slower than usual...which suggests they are underdriven.

Well, I would still be careful! I hooked an MH lamp up to a fluorescent ballast, and it literally blew up in my face! a few people here can tell you that, they saw the pics! Which I can't find anymore!

What kind of lamp and ballast was it?
Form109   [Mar 12, 2010 at 09:51 PM]
its in the title....the lamp is a "Sylvania Metal Arc",and the Ballast is a "VHO" ballast which is a very high output fluorescent ballast. Wink

If they take longer to warm up, That means Overdriven, I think. Cause MV takes longer on an MH ballast due to the fact it is slightly overdriven.

So it might be overdriven. I am not an expert, so IDK xD
Form109   [Mar 13, 2010 at 05:26 AM]
that could possible be....but i cant Quite Visualize it...it seems like an Overdriven lamp would Actually warm up faster no?
f36t8   [Mar 13, 2010 at 12:00 PM]
What i meant was, how many watts are the lamp and ballast?
A_lights   [Mar 13, 2010 at 02:49 PM]
I would run it on a HO ballast to be safe, i ruined a sylvania 100W merc trying to hot restrike it on the Ho ballast, it melted the starting resistor right off!

Wow thats Really Unfortunate....at least it wasnt one of your Good Old American mercury vapor lamps....ill hold out for some VHO lamps so i can Run the Proper Lamps on these....maybe even design my own Fixture.
