isn't an HMI Discharge lamp sort of similar to Metal Halide?

Yes it is, you can Google it and find the Wikipedia page, it seems to be just a extra high pressure lamp that has the same gases of MV and MH producing a daylight spectrum, I think there less efficient them regular MHs and have considerably shorter life spans.
