vince will your Lifefox Carbon rod lighting system come with Sensors that would detect when the Rods got to Short...and automatically feed a longer length to the Lamp?....or how about Automatic Carbon Reloading?....when a Rod is Burned away it is automatically discarded and a New one (from a Storage Case of Carbon Rods) is loaded into the lamps...i like to call it Autofox Rod..
Try to make an arc light that adjust the gap automatically FIRST, and trust me, it's hard! I tried 5 or 6 designs yet, none of them really worked. I gotta admit that your idea is great though!
i Wonder if you could make a Servo System...like when the Rod burns too short..the Arc becomes Too Long and the Voltage Changes (which i think it might)...the Controller automatically senses this...Extinguishes the lamp....Discards the Carbon Rods down the Lamp Post to a Canister in the Base...the a Motor Pushes another Rod into Place and Proceeds to Reignite the Lamp.
I can make a gap adjustment mechanism, and an auto-shutoff mechanism as well. However to change the rods I got to do it manually. There's a lot of adjusting when changing the rods.
The system I'm designing uses synchronous motors and gears, so getting the rods changed automatically is going to be impossible...
what sensor will Detect when the Rods need to be Fed into the Arc?....also Yeah it seems an Automatic Rod changing mechanism would be more trouble than its worth.....also vince...why Synchronous Motors?..are your Motors Low voltage DC motors or mains Voltage AC Motors?
The sensor would actually be a switch. When the moving rod (upper rod) is completely at the bottom of the mechanism, it would push on a NC (normally closed) switch, which would open the circuit and extinguishes the arc.
I use synchronous motor because using electromagnets is too much trouble. (I have to build them). The control is also too hard to get. The upper rod will rather be on a simple slide mechanism, and the synchronous motors run at 6rpm, so they are perfect to move the rod on its mechanism, one for each direction, up (wired in series with the arc) and down (wired in parallel with the arc). They run on 120V AC by the way
