I think the reason for fast rise of the fuel costs in the world, is as a result of the popularity of non off-road four whell drive (4x4) vehicle (Such as SUVs, SUTs [4x4 pickups particularly for road driving, similar to 4x4 SUVs] etc...), which have huge fuel consumption.
These 4x4 SUV and SUT vehicles aren't considered off-road vehicles by me, since they can only travel on those types of lands that a regular car can travel as well (Indeed, they can reach 200 Km/h and have the same gearbox of cars and/or pickups, with the same number of levels).
On dirt track and hard lands, where cars can't be travel, and a true off-road vehicle can travel (Such as the Hummer) 4x4 SUVs and 4x4 pickups (SUTs) can't travel as well.
Here they are called pavement posers, as the only off road they can do is a parking lot or a pavement, both for parking. I wasa not impressed by the first generation of Freelanders, as most of them had major engine and drivetrain problems. Lada was no problem, they just are ugly and slow, but indestructible or nearly so, and a service kit is a set of pliers and the nearest fence.
