[Gone] Old Cable Stayed Signal Arm
Here's one of the few remaining cable stayed signal arms left in Toronto. They used to be quite common in the 50s and early 60s. They stopped installing these when the [url=http://www.galleryoflights.org/mb/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-11764]double guy design[/url] was used starting some time in the mid 60s. Most of the old cable stayed arms were removed during the 80s and 90s but there's still a handful left.

The signal on the old arm is a CGE Grooveback 12-8-8 [url=http://www.galleryoflights.org/mb/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-11808]like mine[/url] except that the original lenses have been replaced with LED around 7 years ago. The other signals are newer CGE heads from the 70s and 80s along with a Fortran poly from the 2000s.

Note the King "tall gumball" too along with a pole that's lost it's gumball in the background.

very interesting support system for the signal! I've never seen anything like that before! What's that mess near the underbrace on the headless pole?
joe_347V   [Apr 24, 2013 at 02:48 AM]
Yep, they were quite common in Toronto at one point but I rarely see them still in use. Pretty unique masts for sure.

@Mike the mess underneath the missing gumball is some bundled up wire.

I know of one in Brampton and Mississauga

Interesting, you have the address or a streetview?
Hanging Light   [Jun 17, 2013 at 12:39 PM]
Yes, Sandalwood Parkway and Richvale Dr.

Steetview link

Interesting, I though by the 80s (since there's R37s on the pole) they would have started using the stubby arms for signals like these.

Oh and to link a streetview properly, click on the link symbol on the left and copy the URL from there.

I seen the king tall gumball and I bet they are adding the king tall gumball with the one in the background

Like I said before, they're mostly using them as spot replacements...
streetlight98   [Jul 07, 2013 at 09:58 PM]
yeah they look quite similar besides a deeper head. i think the kings look more vintage but the coopers match the original incandescent gumballs used in torronto more closely.
joe_347V   [Jul 07, 2013 at 11:13 PM]
Yeah the Coopers have latch on refractors and prismatic glass which looks a lot more like the Powerlites and GEs incandescents they replaced. I think the refractor on the King looks a bit plasticky.
streetlight98   [Jul 08, 2013 at 01:22 AM]
it might be plastic though...
joe_347V   [Jul 08, 2013 at 04:07 AM]
IIRC, the URBs only came with glass refractors. Looks like the King lumes use glass too, I wonder if they have a refractor that looks more vintage. Razz It seems the bare finish is a custom one for Toronto too.

Update: The city went by this intersection and replaced every single CGE 12-8-8 signal with Fortran 12-8-8s. They have York Region style blackplates.

The vintage cable stayed arm assembly has also been replaced by a tapered e style arm. At least they used a hanger Fortran instead of a plumbizer. Razz

Im not really a fan of those new backplates. I see everywhere now uses them except for Oakville Missisauga Caledon and Brampton in the GTA
