Two-section pedestrian signal from Central Park in Manhattan
|
Though two-section vehicular traffic signals are long gone in New York City, there are a handful of two-section pedestrian signals in service in Central Park in Manhattan. These are somewhat different when compared to the vehicular heads, and they do not use the overlap (red and green both lit). Instead, there is a simple change from green to red with nothing special in between. This is common to see; however, another sequence exists, in which a flashing red ball clearance is in use. Similar to the flashing hand, the clearance lasts for a handful of seconds prior to when the red signal indication remains steady.
Above, is an example of a two-section pedestrian signal that I took last Summer. This is of a newer kind, in which replaced an older set-up a couple of years ago.
