Is this still in service or is it just off?

Oh yes it's in service, I just caught it between flashes when both lights are off. We never leave old signal equipment up if it's unused.

I asked because usually here when the light on "Road A" is off, the light for "road B" is on. It alternates between the streets so the whole flasher is never out.

That's how they work here too, but there is just a tenth of a second or so when both are off, that's when I just happened to get the shot.

All the lights on at once puts a strain on the flasher which wears down its life. Alternating the flashing keeps the flasher running more efficiently since only half the current is being run through it

I hardly see how 36 watts is going to wear out the flasher that much, I guess back when they where incandescent it might of had a bit more of an affect on the flasher.

The old town of Scituate, ( which is right near where i live in Cranston) has these. There's two for each direction of the 4-way intersections, so 2 quads.

Here these are more commonly found on country roads and small towns, I only know of two intersections here in Brampton that have them, one of which really needs full signals since it is too busy and confusing as it is. Something else I though I should mention is I got your check back today, turns out the stamp fell off somehow in the mail I'll be re-sending it first thing tomorrow morning.

I was too, I'd love to know how it took five days for them to figure it out it was missing a stamp and then send it back.

You got it. Alternating is a carry over from the old incandescent days. Still common practice since most modern cabinets have one 2 channel flasher

I thought it got lost in the mail, but at least you got it back.

I know of a few still left in Markham too.
