F40T12 4-Lamp Fixture Converted To 6-Lamp
Originally got this as a 4-lamp fixture .. and even when I first saw it thought it'd be a perfect one for converting to 6-lamp.

Even though there's T8's in the picture its actually a T12 fixture (3x 2-lamp F40T12 RS ballasts.)

Neat! Reminds me of a 6-lamp highbay!
I see some "generic" T8s in there too, don't usually see lamps like that!
Are they really running on the T12/RS ballasts without issues? Shocked

I thought the same thing as far as its looks go Laughing , and yeah random mix of F32's in there.

With the F40 RS ballasts, it has a noticeable 60hz flicker until fully warmed up, other than that works fine...but this is only used occasionally, and generally not for real long periods.

Ah so it is a wraparound? Do you have the diffuser? Looks like it should have an injection-molded diffuser. Are those T8s just for the pic or do you actually run the T8s on the T12 ballast? Even if it looks like it works, DON'T DO IT. Shocked You're going to kill the ballast. Since the lamps run at different voltages, you're wreaking havoc on the ballasts by running T8s. They may be physically compatible (fit in the same fixtures without modification) but they're not at all compatible electrically.

I wouldn't call it a wraparound. I think its actually something that had a wood frame around it originally (I don't really remember for sure now, but I kinda remember that part having been laying on the floor next to it at the ReStore (this was on the floor under a shelving unit, along with various other lights & junk)) This was priced separately, that I do remember.

I know I'm overdriving both the ballast and lamps running T8's, but not worried about it Laughing

Nice conversion! I would like to add a couple lamps into a smaller fixture I have.

I have a 2'x4' one (not a troffer though, similar in style to this) that I considered converting from 4 to 8 lamp LOL
no idea if 4 ballasts would actually fit (same for 8 lamps, but looks like 8 might )

Ah I see. I thought it had flanges on the sides for a injection-molded diffuser but it doesn't... It would actually make a good highbay lol. It's not the lamps you need to worry about, it's the ballasts. They'll overheat and leak tar. I think you could kill the capacitors in them too but not positive.

Depends. If they're modern ballasts they're no big loss but I might run T12s anyway. But to each his own. Laughing I'm running a T12 on a T8 ballast though, "wreaking havoc on the LAMP".

lol yeah electronic ballasts it doesn't matter, but running F40s on a magnetic F32T8 ballast is just as bad as F32s on an F40 ballast. An F40T12 ERS ballast is essentially an HO ballast for F32T8s lol.
xmaslightguy   [Mar 21, 2015 at 04:22 AM]
Yep a F40T12 RS ballast running F32T8's is basically the same as taking a F32T8 ballast & wireing it up for 2x overdrive on F32T8's LOL
The ballasts don't seem to get overly hot on this, and have never shut down.. but its not like its something that's run all day every day, most of the time its just sitting in a corner un-used (sometimes without any lamps .. the T8's were simply what I used last)

Running F40's on a F32 ballast won't hurt anything, infact the ballast will be underdriven/run cooler (and for the lamps its basically the same as running them on a LPF F40 ballast)

This ended up getting put in use for a couple months (for raising seeds)...
But I changed lamps so it has 1 T12 & 1 T8 per ballast. Sure it generates some heat, but doesn't get blazingly hot, you can easily touch where the ballasts are without burning yourself.

It would be pretty neat to have them all on magnetic RS ballasts to get that rapid start startup but I don't think three full sized magnetic ballasts would fit in the ballast channel.
