Joe you are right...it is a retrofit HPS lamp with a glow bottle starter inside!
joe_347V   [Sep 28, 2011 at 06:07 AM]
Interesting...a integral glow bottle starter. I thought it was one of those integral ignitor HPS retrofit lamps at first.

That glow bottle glows PINK when starting up! It's a very used Philips HPS retrofit lamp from 1994.....it has many hours and still good! The others where it came from, some are still woring great, others already glowing white, others have blackening on the outer glass, some already stopped working, some already got relamped from dead retrofit to going back to 250 watt merc, some are now relamped with MH LOL!!

Nice set ups Jace the Gull. I knew the bulb on the left was a Philips Retrolux 215w lamp by looking at it. The frosted bulb is a GE eh? I know they make diffuse HPS lamps in E28 and E37 envelopes.

That's interesting .. I knew that Sylvania used to market inside-frosted tubular lamps in Europe during the 1980s, but I was not aware that GE proposed such a product nowadays...

They didn't Geoff made up that idea, I kinda played along......

I have gotten those lamps "frosted" yes permanet type of this texture.........how??? Secret.....it's not exactly a home made thing to do....although it's homemade but 99 percent of us do not have the equipments to do this......LOL
streetlight98   [Sep 29, 2011 at 11:22 PM]
How did you make this frosted?
gmercury2000   [Sep 29, 2011 at 11:30 PM]
Lol I was told not to tell so I figured I'de have a little fun w/ this!
GullWhiz   [Sep 29, 2011 at 11:33 PM]
Secret...I said plenty on what is needed to be made in my last comment
streetlight98   [Sep 29, 2011 at 11:36 PM]
Yeah, butif it's a secret, I won't know how to do that to my lamps. Razz Sad Does the etch survive or does it wear off?
GullWhiz   [Sep 29, 2011 at 11:38 PM]
Trust me, you most likely don't have the machine to do it.....most don't even if you were to go some store that has the machine, it would def cost you a lot LOL
streetlight98   [Sep 29, 2011 at 11:41 PM]
my grandpa has lots of stuff to paint/texture stuff. He refubishes old cars and sells them. He's painting my OV10 for me too. He only has the reflector right now though.
joe_347V   [Sep 29, 2011 at 11:58 PM]
Hey Jace, did you guys put something like this on the glass to etch it?
streetlight98   [Sep 29, 2011 at 11:59 PM]
He said he used a machine.....
joe_347V   [Sep 30, 2011 at 12:00 AM]
So, you don't need a machine to etch glass...
TiCoune66   [Sep 30, 2011 at 12:00 AM]
Frosted HPS lamps? This is sure unusual! And GE would now offer them?
Silverliner14B   [Sep 30, 2011 at 12:10 AM]
Well, if you think about it, there are two ways to etch glass. One is by acid, the other by sandblasting. Both techniques were used on the early outside frost bulbs before IF bulbs came along in 1925.
streetlight98   [Sep 30, 2011 at 12:17 AM]
My grandpa has a sandblaster for sure.
A_lights   [Sep 27, 2012 at 02:32 AM]
so how was this made frosted? we still demand an answer! Razz
streetlight98   [Sep 27, 2012 at 02:45 AM]
I was told not to tell... Shocked Razz Laughing
