The Ballast Can Project
Well, here's the ballast can with a new mounting bracket and strap like what you would see on those old MV ballast cans. I also swapped out the original connector at the bottom with a plastic one that's weathertight.

I have to say, bending that 1/8" aluminium was a pain though without a bending press -_- .

More pics of it, taken during construction:

Made this today with a Advance 70w HPS ballast I had lying around. I still need to make a bracket for it though. There's some extra room in the can which might get used for a PFC cap if I find a 28 mF cap. I'm debating whether to paint the can black or just leave it silver but I'm probably going to make an Advance label for the can.

If I was going to use it outside I think I might seal the can and pot the ballast with some epoxy fill.

With the label added and shown next to an identical 70w Advance HPS ballast core.

Nice! Very Happy You should hook it up to your powerlite gumball just for a pic or two. Cool I personaly think gumballs look good in HPS since it matches the incandescent a little closer than MV or MH, though of course nothing beats an incandescent or MV gumball.

Thanks Mike! and yeah I think I'll upload a pic of it running my gumball tomorrow. I personally like seeing 3000K MH lamps in a gumball though, almost looks like incandescent. The ones in Toronto mostly use 3000K lamps but some contractors have snuck in some 4000K lamps during relamping. Neutral

hmm. i didn't know that you could get certain color temps with MH lamps. I noticed most pulse start lamps are a warmer color than probe start lamps.

You are canned!
joe_347V   [Mar 03, 2013 at 06:32 PM]
Yeah, most pulse start MH lamps come in either 3000K or 4000K. I think Venture even makes them in 5000K.

@Jace, should I make a canned gull for my next project? Razz Laughing

Ooo! canned gull in water just like tuna eh? Razz Laughing I personally like the cooler MH color temps better for outdoors or in a gym or industrial building but the warmer color is nice for inside stores or in recessed cans in offices or what have you. Green MH lamps look nice in mercury vapor floods lol.

Nicely done! I've thought about doing this but never got around to it. I don't think 70w HPS can ballasts were ever made - but they did make postline ballasts, which are kind of a smaller can ballast designed to fit inside the pole for posttop fixtures.
streetlight98   [Mar 03, 2013 at 10:05 PM]
Yeah I think it'd be cool to make a ballast can!

Thanks, I thought about making my own ballast can for a while and so I couldn't resist not making one when I found some sturdy looking aluminium cans.

Cool! Looks like it was a fun project!
