Is the old highmasts from the 1970 DOOMED?
See the new tampered curved arm streetlight with OVH? You guessed it! Very same ones from [url=http://www.galleryoflights.org/mb/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-2626] this picture! [/url]

They are NOT yet in service....they pretty much are assigned to be mostly on the ramp areas....so there is a chance some highmasts on this intersection would stay as some are on the median on I-95...so would they stay? Stay tuned!!!!!

Great Looking Setup!.....shame if the old Highmast had to go....Upgrades are inevitable.

Odd that they would replace high masts with cobra heads Surprised here its all replace every cobra head we can with high masts Confused

That's wierd since most cobraheads get replaced with highmast lights.

HI Jace

It would be nice to try and save a High Mast Light especially a 1000 watter, so far I have a 400 watt High Mast Light which was saved from Manchester UK see HERE for the Light and see HERE for the High Mast Lighting.

Here in ther UK High Mast Lighting were origionally 1000 watt mercury but since the 1980s were replaced by 400w HPS, within the last few years High Mast lighting is also being replaced with shorter Street Lights, something to do with the public moaning about light trespass and Light pollution. However they are still used a lot around Multi leval Roads, Motorways the Entrence to the Mersy Tunnels, Docks, Airports and Sports Grounds, so they won't dissapear completely.

All the Best

Colin

Here there are also some 1KW HPS high masts being replaced; with newer and taller high masts! Any ways I MIGHT try to get one of the old ones (there also taking down several hundred cobra heads Shocked So I might be able to get a few more light this summer. Cool

Those here, are MH, which formerly were MV...We have a new intersection near by....not yet done...not for a while, but it got some new 1000 watt HPS highmasts......and some of the old ones a bit farther up are being replaced see right here

@Niall, yep I guess most of the cobras/truss lights and the highmasts surrounding the Hwy. 401/403/410 interchange will be replaced in advance for a highway widening project there.

For the others: Here's a pic from March showing a new highmast pole being installed, replacing the cobras.

I kind of miss the old truss lights there though, since that interchange was one of the last large freeway to freeway interchanges that I know of that was still mostly lit by truss lights. I've always wonder why MTO stopped using the truss arms now since to my knowledge, the style of truss arm that they used were a pretty unique design. Neutral

Process update on this setup....I haven't seen those turn on yet, so they are not in service yet, but they ALL are already installed...and there are a lot of different arm sizes...the sizes seems to follow from smallest to largest I have seen....the size are rough approx. from 5 feet, 10 feet, 15 feet, 20 feet, and the largest I saw seems to be 25 feet...the one above would be the 20 footer. The 5 foot was found mostly on the ramps...(and was also unusually installed closely to each other...which I don't see too often in state of MD)

An additional update, it seems they are going to add TWO new highmasts sandwiching an overpass which is this exact road that overpasses I-95. No highmast installed yet, just two big concrete with 6 or 8 big threaded rods and large tubing coming out of the hole for the wiring.

Nice I wish I see more high masts here, I wonder how deep the concrete has to be underground to hold these tall high masts. I learned that 25' light poles require concrete about 7 feet deep.
GullWhiz   [Feb 26, 2011 at 03:16 AM]
I am not sure Dave, but we may find out.....

Now the 2 new highmasts are lit, 6 lamp GE highmast fixtures on each pole...50% of the new cobrahead setup is now connected and lit...for the past few weeks they have been digging and wiring each light....by one by one! This is the update!!! They also started doing same thing on the next intersection of I-95!

Well if you go by the way direct burial poles are embedded then a 100ft high mast would have a 12ft deep base (10% of the pole + 2ft) I couldn't find anything about high masts though and I searched for about 45 minutes.
GullWhiz   [Feb 26, 2011 at 04:28 AM]
The ones in the pic I think is 65 feet tall
joe_347V   [Feb 26, 2011 at 05:01 AM]
Here's a PDF with some minimum highmast pole footing depths on it and it says the 100' poles have a minimum depth of 14ft, looks like you're not that far off Niall Very Happy The depths for the 65ft poles aren't listed though.
