End of an Era
The sunset marks the transition from day to night, however night will roll back over to day in a day/night cycle...

But for these MTO truss lights there is no more day, the sunset marks their impending removal and the transition to a new lighting system...the highmast lights which loom ominously above the truss lights currently avaiting their fate...

They're 400w party floodlights that are orange and turn on and off when used with the exclusive Alto lamp. Laughing Razz
joe_347V   [Aug 13, 2011 at 03:21 PM]
Not only that they come with a built in noise generator. Laughing

And later a fog machine. Laughing

You know it's funny how a thread about cobraheads being removed ended here. Laughing Razz

Yeah. Eveloution. Razz Laughing

Heading slightly back on topic, Razz I remember seeing R47s, M-400A3s, M-400R2s, and possibly even AE 25s and Cooper OV 25s in this interchange.

On the very beginning of the 410 they kept a R47 and AE 125 on there. I think they may have forgotten it a long time ago, and its still not gone even after they took down this whole area of truss lights. Hope MTO doesn't find them to remove them. Very Happy Laughing

I noticed that too, there's also a left behind truss light on one of the QEW/Trafalgar ramps and another on Wilson where it meets the 400 in Toronto.
Hanging Light   [Jul 03, 2013 at 10:48 PM]
The QEW one really surprises me though. They have the FCO's on the ramps then they just left the truss light there. It doesn't light anymore though. I wonder if they leave them on purpose. I went to the street view of the wilson one. That one is on a wooden pole too, Strange. Shocked
joe_347V   [Jul 04, 2013 at 06:12 AM]
Yeah the Wilson one is a bit odd as the MTO truss arms are rarely used on wood poles. There's also this pole which used to hold a MTO truss arm. This pair of truss lights were also left behind too.
Hanging Light   [Jul 05, 2013 at 03:03 AM]
All the ones left behind I've seen don't light at night. The QEW one doesn't neither do the pair of 410 ones either.
joe_347V   [Jul 05, 2013 at 05:26 AM]
Hmm, I guess they just forgot about them then. I thought they left the one on the QEW to light up the ramp better. It seems MTO have started to use the truss arms again (but a longer version) these were installed recently and some new truss arms went up when they redid some of the old QEW overpasses between Hamilton and St. Catherines last year. The new truss arms hold FCO lights though.
Hanging Light   [Jul 06, 2013 at 03:32 AM]
Oh yea I saw the one in between Hamilton and St Catherines. Its the one with the B2255's on it.

here i've seen missout lights on RIDOT's system still get serviced. I guess they forget about them when they used some grant money and don't want to spend their own cash to replace the missouts? It's fine by me since it leaves behind a little bit of history. Cool
joe_347V   [Jul 08, 2013 at 12:02 AM]
MTO is usually quite through in removing stuff but I like how they left a truss light up. Razz

Oddly enough one of their yards still sport a 50s era double guy pole with original remote ballasted 400w merc clamshells and a some slightly newer poles with OV-25 remotes.

It looks like they're trying out LED lights though...LED highmasts have popped up at the new Cambridge service centre. (all the lights in here have been replaced with LED shoeboxes and highmasts). The lights over the ramp are still the old HPS truss lights though.
streetlight98   [Jul 08, 2013 at 01:48 AM]
ahh so the new service center has LEDs at it? RIDOT hasn't experimented with LEDs yet but MASSDOT has some LEDs on the Braga Bridge in Fall River on I-195. they only have a few. There are some on rte 79, i think it is... not as bright as 400w HPS that's for sure. They look about the size of 150W equivalent lights and are about that bright.
joe_347V   [Jul 08, 2013 at 04:00 AM]
Yeah, a lot of the LED test lumes done here seem to be quite dimmer than the HPS they replaced.
Hanging Light   [Jul 08, 2013 at 09:48 PM]
Cambridge is testing LED high masts?! Shocked I don't think it will be bright enough or a high enough wattage to support the highway. I saw the shoebox's there but I didn't know those high masts were LED though. I don't see MTO switching from HPS to LED High masts for a while.
joe_347V   [Jul 09, 2013 at 04:24 AM]
Well, not the city but the new service centre that's near it. I've heard rumours of MTO testing out LED too.
