RIDOT Park-Ride Lot Converted to LED
This is a streetview shot of the T.F. Green RIDOT Park-Ride lot in Warwick, RI. As you can see, it was lit by M-250R2s (250W HPS) with individual photocells. RIDOT replaced these lights with Leo-Tek "Toilet lids", and I have to see it's decently lit. The Leo-Teks have individual photocells too. The first LED replacements I've seen in RIDOT's system that replaced PC-controlled lights. Then again, RIDOT's HPS to LED project is just in its infancy. With larger PC-controlled installations, I wonder if they'll retrofit the poles to be relay-controlled or install a new lighting system altogether instead of using LEDs with PCs.

I like having the drop lens lights PC-controlled but don't like PC-controlled FCO lights since you can't tell if a PC is making a light dayburn unless you're right under it. Makes maintenance tougher. With drop lens HPS, dayburners are very obvious.

Looks like the LEDs are starting to creep into your neck of the woods too Laughing Sad

Yeah, as it turns out, ALL the Park & Ride lots have LEDs now!

I wonder if RIDOT got on the LED bandwagon. Over here when we refitted to LED, they used wireless controls instead of standard PCs. The wireless controls are designed to be installed in place of a PC. I know Mississauga used lumes with integrated wireless controls though.

Yeah right now they are still maintaining their existing HPS lights and installing spot replacements for failed HPS fixtures but they are doing small jobs here and there. I was surprised that they installed LEDs on a PC-controlled set-up. Up until this I'd only seen LEDs on relay-controlled set-ups.

Unlike NGrid, who changes the PC with every lamp change, RIDOT never changes the photocell unless it's a dayburner or the fixture gets replaced. RIDOT always uses blue photocells too whereas NGrid uses gray/black 120V ones (though once in a great while I see some blue NGrid ones pop up here and there).

Fortunately around here those stupid wireless controllers don't seem to have appeared on anyone's radar for "new tech" to try out. RIDOT has used relay cabinets or PCs for their LEDs (all new installs use relay cabinets) and the Pascoag (pronounced "Pass-co") Utility District up in Burillville, RI has used PCs too.

Uh oh.. This does not look good...

Yeah it's decently lit at night but dimmer than before (well overall might be the same since two of the HPS didn't work lol. If all the HPS worked, the lot would have probably been overlit anyway). The LEDs are tilted WAY up, almost like flood lights, since they're too directional and wouldn't light far enough forward lol. The LEDs would be fine if they added two double poles in the middle of the lot, making eight lights total.

Well, all I can say is this; these will probably fail in about 5-10 years, I swear. Because you know modern tech Cool ! Lol
