Powdercoating is the process of baking enamel onto aluminum parts. The parts are bathed in electrostatic chemicals which the powder adheres to. seems like a pretty durable way to apply the finnish to the signal heads,most of the ones in my city are yellow but the newly installed ones are dark brown.
Ahh. Time is probably another reason most companies use this method then. I'm guessign black visors don't need the second coat though. i always like seeign how stuff is made. It's one of those things that has always fascinated my.
black visors get two coats because the exterior is gloss the interior must be flat to avoid light reflection/glare. plastic visors are injection molded all one color and hand painted black after (can't bake plastic!) I like seeing how stuff is made too. McCain did a segment on the discovery channel once which showed their headquarters in Vista, CA and their casting foundry in Tijuana, Mexico. Their stuff looks nice until you hang it ...doh!
