I see what you are talking about...in the far right on the pic....more likely it's a vent, but it could indeed be an incandescent one.....
Some of my schools from the 60s had those and similar (some were flat, some were a bit raised with thick glass while others had different styles) and in my other old school built in 1969, there was a wing that was added built in 1988 there was similar square fixtures but with 100 watt MV, and to make it better, CLEAR MERCS!!!
My grandma's house square recessed lights is from roughly 1955-1959.....they've existed for a long time and was actually popular in the 80s too and those were used over the kitchen sinks or all ever basements even in 1985....popularity went down around 1988 or so for those fixtures....those fixtures are still made today though and you can see them at your hardware store....
That square thing is indeed a vent. It's an opening that sends air in the ceiling to be pumped back into the HVAC system. This building uses ceilings as plenums for air return.
The subway here still has some of the original square recessed lights from '54. They're old incandescent emergency lights, most are out of service though (replaced with emergency ballasts) but I know at least one station still has working ones.
my high school has older remote emergency heads but i'm assuming they're out of service since there are typical two-head units with battery casings mounted upside-down on the ceilings that look more modern. some of the exit signs look very old and cool incredibly tacky with red LED retrofits, as they were designed for the whitish glow of incandescent lamps.
My high school had regular 120v incandescent emergency lights in recessed cans which were from the 60s. They were replaced with 120v surface mount emergency lights with GU 10 halogens around 2008. The original exit signs were recessed into the wall and used incandescent but they had been retrofitted with either LED or PL by the I was there. By 2008 they replaced all the original exit signs with new plastic LED ones.
My homeroom is in a newer wing that was added on in the 90s around the same time my elementary school was built. There are similarities between the style windows used, the style bubblers, (the rhode island word for "drinking fountain"; also like the word "carriage" being the rhode island word for "shopping cart" lol) and how the rooms are arranged but the lighting is different. It seems that for the new high school wing they had originally installed 3 lamp 2X4 T8 troffers in the classrooms and hallways versus my elementary school, which has 3 lamp T12 wraps in the classrooms and 1X4 2 lamp drop lens troffers in the hallways. I think my elementary school did a retrofit to T8 over the summer though. I noticed the steel PL exit signs that i loved so much were all repalced with plastic LED exit signs and the "door wash" (what i call the wallwash lights mounted over the classroom and cafeteria doors) lights were T8. I noticed the 1X4 troffers had new fluorescent green stickers saying "EMERGENCY LIGHT" on them every third light too, which I'm guessing means they were retrofitted to T8.
The "Q-Tip" parking lot post tops were replaced by LED floods and the HPS and PL wallpacks were replaced by RAB LED wallpacks (well i call them "downpacks" lol) that looks just like VHS tapes from underneath. I'm unsure if the decorative looking probe start MH lights above the stage in the auditorium are still there though. My last year there in 2010 only 3 out of the eight worked. They were never really used at all since the switch was hidden behind the curtain and i was probably the only one who knew where the switches were lol. I told a janitor about them being dead but i don't know if anything was done about them. They were basically high bays inside a brown cast aluminum cylender-type housing with a flat glass lens. I think they were GE, as i saw one on Ebay.
