Continuous fluorescent tunnel lighting
A good idea...it avoids the nasty flickering effect one gets now when driving through a tunnel HID luminaires. Sorry this didn't come out better - it was bound in a large book & difficult to scan.

Yeah, I also like the fluorescent tunnel lights better than the HID ones because of what you said about the flickering effect.

But only if it is well maintained.
And this is VERY expensive to maintain - about 4..10x more fixtures then with HID "classic", not as much predictable life. And on top of this they tend to flash at EOL (assume preheat circuit), what is in my eyes worse then the flickering effect from passing across bright fixtures.
Knowing, how the road maintenance operate, it would yield after few years to barely half of them operating, so situation way worse then with HID...

Of course only if it's well maintained, Wink
The fluorescents here are usually HO/VHO so they don't flash at EOL though.
I agree that maintenance costs are much higher than with HID though because of the shorter life and more fixtures.
The thing I don't like about HID is that the light distribution issues with some installations.
