Another Relamped Preheater
This was the one with one good lamp (that one being the one on the right). The lamp on the left is a brand new Sylvania F40CWP (that's strictly what i purchase as it's the cheapest and definetly most reliable IMO. It's interesting how some lamps start virtually instantly while others take up to 10 seconds to finally make a sucessful start. They all got new starters and lamps (except for the right lamp/starter in this fixture) and the new lamps and starters were of the same exact kind and brand new so it just goes to show how random preheat can be (and that's what makes it the most fun to watch!) Plus there's no strobing like there is with RS...

The garage is surprisingly very bright now with all the lamps working beautifully. The lamps were installed 10/14/12 on my brother's 9th birthday. These lights are pretty much never used, but i like knowing they work. Plus i hope to repalce these and add them to my collection when i get my own house and have room. There's already three T8 shoplites in the back that i can use to repalce these when the time's right. Of course I'll be repainting them if/when i get them.

What's the one old lamp in this fixture? I'd replace both lamps/starters at the same time, but only if I had enough.
Congrats! Smile

The one on the right... I didn't replace the working lamp since it had next to no blackening so it still have a long life ahead of itself... I love the color from CW tubes. Smile

I mean what brand?
streetlight98   [Oct 16, 2012 at 12:34 AM]
didn't check... I'd guess it's a Sylvania GTE workshop lamp liek the removed one though...

Okay that figures then.

Nice work! They'll be working well if you do get to keep them one day! Cool
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Oct 16, 2012 at 03:14 PM]
Yeah, when you get your own place you can light your garage or basement with these!
streetlight98   [Oct 16, 2012 at 11:26 PM]
Yeah! Plus there are more in the basement but something tells me she didn't want me to venture in there to check if they all worked. she answered me very fast when i asked lol. If the house is every sold though, surely the new owners will trash the old fixtures. Even nowadays most people aren't familiar with what a fluorescent starter is and they'd probably think the fixtures were toast if one were to die. Rolling Eyes Anyways, i'll be watching all the vintage fluorescents in my family closely (though not too closely since i don't want to appear greedy or anything) in the event they need to be fixed or i can take them down. My great aunt said i can use her tool shed to store any lights so if any absolutly must come down i could always store them there though i'd feel weird dropping lights off at her house lol.

Yep, keep an eye out, Mike!
Or maybe eventually you'll find another collector in your area who you could have store your lights for safekeeping..
streetlight98   [Oct 16, 2012 at 11:48 PM]
If there are any local collectors that can have a few too! I'd love to share these fixtures but I don't want to ship something that long since i'd never find a box and it'd be a good amount of $. Maybe in the future when i get these lights if someone's in the area they couls stop by and take a light that i'd have multiple versions of since that will be the case with quite a few lights.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Oct 16, 2012 at 11:50 PM]
Yeah, I know what you mean...someday I want to get a 75w 8' 2-lamp slimline fixture but that would be near impossible to ship!

BTW, not sure if I had mentioned this before, but I eventually did see her basement and she's got three more of these down there, hardmounted to the subfloor (NOT the Joists!) One has a toggle switch on the ceiling next to it and has two cool white DuroTest lamps. The second is switched by its pull-chain and has a pair of Westie F40CWs with little to no blackening. The third one had the lamps removed (a Westie F40CW and a 34W GE from the 80s) and I have no idea how it is switched. I hope to get these three fixtures too, though there's no replacement fixtures down there for them so I will have to find some T8s to replace those three fixtures.

You had mentioned that before...the DuroTest lamps aren't the rare cool white PowerTwist ones are they?
streetlight98   [Jul 22, 2014 at 12:43 AM]
Oh I did? I thought so but I wasn't positive. No they're standard lamps but DuroTest lamps are awesome as it is. Very Happy

Mine are "Duro-Lite" (Residential grade version?) but still PT and Vita-Lite the same!
