Found this enhanced striplight inside a store. They disconnected the old Universal RS ballast and jammed a lampholder with a CFL in. O_o

I guess this conversion must be done a while ago since the rest of the store is T8, oddly enough one of the T8 lights used to be preheat.

Yeah, I've noticed that some of the older stores in Toronto have quite scary wiring and lighting inside.
streetlight98   [Jul 09, 2012 at 12:50 AM]
I've seen a gift shop that's lit entirely with cheapo shoplites and instead of being hardwired, they are plugged into extension cords and are plugged into various outlets in the store. Shocked

Shocked I wonder if they run around the store pulling pull chains when they turn the lights on. Laughing
streetlight98   [Jul 09, 2012 at 03:13 AM]
It's either that or they go around plugging them all into the wall. Laughing Or I guess why not just flip the breaker off at the end of the day. Razz Laughing I wouldn't be suprised if the place still used fuses. It's such a dump and it's in Providence. It's more like a second time around store than a gift shop, but my grandma likes to go there becuase they do sell some nice nik naks.

Update: last time I was there, the CFL has been replaced with a incandescent. Laughing

Up next: a carbon arc Laughing

Then a nice whale oil lantern. Razz Laughing

And then a good old candle. Laughing
Antstar85   [Jan 22, 2013 at 03:05 PM]
I think it would be much better if they installed a wall pack. Laughing
streetlight98   [Jan 22, 2013 at 08:49 PM]
or just installed a pair of F40/CWs in the fixture. Laughing
FGS   [Jan 22, 2013 at 11:06 PM]
Just re-drywall the room then put up a new fluorescent fixture. Sockets look bad to me.
streetlight98   [Jan 22, 2013 at 11:14 PM]
Nah that's too simple. Razz Laughing Personally if i owned the place I'd remove the old fixture (or fixtures depending on how you look at it lol) and install a suspended ceiling with a 2X4 troffer with two or three T8 tubes.
joe_347V   [Jan 23, 2013 at 02:10 AM]
Laughing If I were the owner I would put a drop ceiling, redrywall the walls and put up a 1x4 troffer. Razz

I would re-drywall the ceiling and walls, then reballast the fixture (the ballast is probably bad which is why they did this) to T8 and stick in some 6500K lamps.
joe_347V   [Jul 02, 2013 at 06:30 AM]
Store's lease is ending in August and I highly doubt the next tenant will keep the fixture...
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Aug 30, 2013 at 05:46 AM]
LOL! Laughing Try to get the Universal ballast on the off chance it's still good while they're remodeling! I often see lights, shelves, pegboard, etc. outside stores for free when they remodel! (Which for me is jackpot; I acquire all kinds of "Good Junk" all the time!
joe_347V   [Aug 30, 2013 at 11:53 PM]
I'm sure everything is gone by now...
streetlight98   [Aug 31, 2013 at 01:44 AM]
there's a chance that the sockets had corroded so there's a poor connection with one of the lamp ends so they didn't light...
joe_347V   [Aug 31, 2013 at 07:42 AM]
Well, the ballast did look like it didn't overheat. Razz

I bet they used 34 watt crappy energy saver lamps before the did that to the fixture.
