Philips SDW "White SON" LV
I finally got myself one of these obscure things. This is a low voltage (55 volt arc tube) version of the European Philips SDW White Son high pressure sodium lamps in a medium based E21 format that was aimed for the US market. Even so, these lamps did not become very popular here in the US.

It requires an ANSI S-105 hybrid magnetic/electronic ballast to operated correctly. I've tried it on a regular S-54 100 watt high pressure sodium ballast and it works but lights up the usual HPS orange instead of the incandescent-like white color it is supposed to be.

I haven't seen them too much used here either, probably because of that special ballast required...?
MASTER CityWhite CDO-TT CMH lamps are definitely an easier way to change streets from "orange" to "warm white" as they run on a regular HPS gear.
