Light And Sign Replacement
In this pic the "Be Prepared To Stop" sign with wig wag amber lights and HPS flood are being upgraded from a laminated 4'X8' plywood sign to an aluminum sign with LED amber lights and new MH flood. The frame on the back side of the signs just bolt on to the 4 bolt flange on the pole for easy removal and installation, and lifted by the boom truck. You can see the other existing sign in the background with the green back that is also being replaced.

By the way, we have also these portable "Lane blocked, follow the flash arrow" LED signs with both amber or red-orange LEDs arrows. But our sign is significantly different. Instead of horizontal arrows they have diagonals arrow pointing downright and downleft. Our equivalent sign can also display "X" instead of the arrows indicate that the whole road is blocked.
If i will can i will photograph it or even make a movie of it.

We have a similar arrow thing like you have here Darren, except what we have (at least in my state) is a black board with round amber lights forming arrows......

Here labour is cheap enough that you find a person dressed in either red or yellow overalls with a reflective jacket ( like all the road workers) waving a red flag during the day and a red LED striplight at night. Some sites have as well a welded steel dummy dressed in an overall with a orange Xenon beacon on top, holding a red flag on the side traffic is to pass. You often see a sign saying " Please do not kill us!" placed prominently before the digs. If a section of lane is closed they place drums or blocks every 50m to prevent taxis driving down it , as well as leaving the rubble in piles at the beginning as a crash barrier in addition to the signs and cones.

Here in Western Canada there is usually a flag person or "Traffic Control Technician" as they like to be called controlling traffic during most road construction, especially where traffic needs to be stopped or traffic alternated if a lane is obstructed. In this situation there is enough room for vehicles to get by in both directions.Drums are used here too, mostly I've seen them on the freeway where they close a lane for construction as well as truck mounted arrow boards parked inside the drums of the closed lane.If someone went through the drums the back of the truck would be the crash barrier.

It's roughly the same here in Ontario except that the arrowboards here are black on orange with amber leds for the arrow and we use orange and black road cones. The trucks here are sometimes fitted with a impact attenuator on the back bumper.

We have the same arrows here, a mix of newer LEDs on batteries, and incandescent PARs on generators.

I think that mixing of various light sources in traffic lights and flashing signs like this one in Israel is illegal. All of the lights must be the same light source.
I think this as i never saw multiple light sources in traffic lights or flashing signs with multiple lights in Israel.

It's standard practice to use LEDs for the red and green lights and incandescent for the yellow light in Ontario. This is because the yellow light is off most of the time which doesn't justify the cost of the LEDs and to prevent snow from acclimating on the signal lens during winter since the incandescents generate heat.

In New York City, they had ONLY Red as LED and yellow and green was still incandescent in the early LED years.....then later when I visited New York City again, the Red and Green was then LEDs while Yellow was still incandescent.......I think now some yellows are LEDs while others are incandescent......not too sure...

Here in Western Canada,in new LED installations the red, yellow and green are all LED,also when traffic lights are being upgraded or serviced, traffic signals with 8 inch yellow and green are being replaced with 12 inch like the red.All new traffic signals installed are 12 inch.

The traffic lights in Israel can't be upgraded. When the city wants to move from incandescents to LEDs in traffic lights in Israel, the entrie traffic light system (Exluding the controller box) are replaced. Also there are standards in Israel that sets the legal size of a traffic light of any type and as so replacing signals in a traffic light to a different size in Israel is illegal and also can't be done with the traffic lights that we have in Israel.
I think the standards for traffic lights in Israel are very much more severes then in the US. As in the US there are so many traffic lights companies, there are almost no standards for them so they are freely producted in any style and shape like street lighting while lighting companies also offers third party parts (Signals, etc...) for the traffic lights. This in contrast to Israel where we have only one company called "Menora" and it is a monopol on the traffic lights in Israel. Menora produces its traffic light according to the rules of the Ministry of Transport of Israel. Also our traffic light rules are based on the german traffic lights.
You can see my pictures of our traffic lights in Israel to see that ALL of the traffic lights have the same size of signals that can't be replaced but only repaired. This relevant also for flashers and pedestrians lights. In all of these lights if one signal failed the whole traffic light is replaced.

Wow, sound so strict. In our government, sometimes we get such fund to repair or replace these signals. Nowdays, if they are lucky, the signals at the intersection can be overhaul pending on the budget approval.
joe_347V   [May 06, 2010 at 06:58 PM]
I don't much about the US besides that the traffic signals must comply to guidelines set by the federal MUTCD but this usually varies by state since most states have their own amendements to the federal standards.

In Ontario all new traffic signal installations must have at least a 12" diameter red light and 8" diameter yellow and green lights. The two smaller lights are usually upsized to 12" lights at busier intersections such as at freeway offramps and on major arterial roads.

I believe all traffic signals used here must meet requirements on visibility and shape, size and colours set by the MTO. The signals here always have a yellow backplate installed and are themselves yellow. I believe black is permitted only special areas where a yellow signal would stand out.

Even the signal mounting and location within a intersection is also specified by the MTO.

I checked our traffic lights when i went with my father to Canyon Haifa mall and found that most of that i wrote in the former comment was way wrong. The reason for the unusually huge difference between the US and Israel in terms of traffic lights buildings is only because of the difference in the size of the two region.
Because "Menora" is a monopol company in traffic lights production in Israel even if the signals of our traffic lights can be replaced, this willn't cause changes in the traffic light appearance as all parts of the light will always be the same.
With the size of the traffic lights signals in Israel: there are standards for them in Israel.
In USA there are so many traffic lights manufacturers and USA itself contains 50 countries, each country have their own standards to the traffic lights.
And indeed, not all "Menora" traffic lights have the exact shape but as a standard they should color the body of their traffic lights black i think to facilitate seeing the lights at a daylight.
The reason of the lack of the blended light sources traffic lights is because the electricity to the LEDs in the LED traffic lights in Israel are probably from the entrie traffic light and not from a seperate driver on each signal.
